Craftsmans, bungalows and ranch-style homes line the streets
A patchwork of pastel California bungalows, Craftsman homes and low-flung ranch-style homes create a colorful streetscape throughout the area. Most of these homes were built in the 1950s, 60s and 70s and feature attached garages, small, landscaped yards and front porches and patios, some of which have expansive views of the city and the surrounding hillsides. And while some homes may appear to be aging, many have been renovated and updated with modern amenities. The streets are narrow and hilly, and sidewalks are abundant, making the neighborhood walkable. Prices range from $560,000 for three bedrooms and one bathroom to $650,000 for three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Those looking for something with less upkeep can find condos in the neighborhood, ranging from $370,000 for two bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms to $460,000 for three bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms.Less than a mile from the Oakland Zoo
Foothill Square is less than a mile from the Oakland Zoo, often cited as among the best in the United States owing to its pleasant atmosphere, well-maintained exhibits and its vast array of animals. Further east are several nature parks, hiking trails and camping destinations in the Oakland Hills, like Anthony Chabot Regional Park, Leona Canyon and Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park. Reinhardt Regional Park is popular for its ancient, redwood-covered forests with picturesque overlooks and panoramic views.Castlemont High School gives kids many ways to learn

At the bottom of the hill is Foothill Square Shopping Center on MacArthur Boulevard, the neighborhood’s namesake. There, residents fill up their shopping carts at Foods Co., an 80,000-square-foot grocery store that opened in 2014 to provide a source of healthy food to a part of the city where, at the time, there was little grocery shopping beyond corner markets. The same shopping center also has a dry cleaner, a Wells Fargo Bank and a Ross clothing store, and Planet Fitness is right across the street. There are several fast and casual restaurants when residents want a quick meal, including Carl's Jr., Happy Hot Dog, Happy Donuts and Ben's Burgers.Crime
