Why people want to live in Foothill Square
Foothill Square is a small, accurately named neighborhood located at the foot of Oakland's eastern hills, just across the highway from the Oakland Zoo. The neighborhood was developed in the mid-20th century as Foothill Boulevard became a major east–west route connecting East Oakland to downtown and San Leandro. Residential blocks filled in around streetcar and bus lines, and small commercial areas followed the traffic. Today, the area is best known to most Oakland residents for the Foothill Square Shopping Center, which is the nearest shopping center for a large chunk of East Oakland residents.

Craftsmans, bungalows and ranch-style homes line the streets
A mix of pastel California bungalows, Craftsman homes and midcentury ranch-style homes creates a colorful streetscape throughout the western part of the neighborhood. Most homes were built in the 1950s, '60s and '70s and feature attached garages, small yards and, frequently, views of the nearby hills. Many houses have been renovated and updated with modern amenities. Prices in the area are considerably lower than in neighborhoods in the hills across the highway, and mostly in line with other parts of southeast Oakland. Home prices range from the mid $400,000s to around $800,000.

Foothill Square Shopping Center anchors the local retail scene
"It's a neighborhood that's all about location," says associate broker Mark DuBois of KW East Bay, who has worked in the area for over 20 years. "You're right next to shopping, right next to the highway, right next to the zoo. It's all right there." The Foothill Square Shopping Center serves as the main commercial hub for Foothill Square as well as many surrounding neighborhoods. The shopping center is home to a few large department stores and a mix of national and regional chain shops and restaurants, and is anchored by the local Food Co. supermarket. Several highly rated local restaurants can be found nearby along MacArthur and Foothill boulevards, including OakTown Kabobs and the long-standing Happy Hot Dog diner. Locals looking for a bit more dining and nightlife often head to Old San Leandro, a few miles south of the neighborhood.

The Oakland Zoo and more things to do outside
The only thing separating Foothill Square from Oakland Zoo is Interstate 580, and most homes are within a mile of the zoo entrance by foot or by car. Several sprawling wilderness areas can be found in the hills surrounding the zoo, offering hiking and mountain biking trails and excellent views of the Bay Area. These include Anthony Chabot Regional Park, Leona Canyon and Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park. "The hiking access is a big deal," says Dubois. "Being right next to the zoo means you can drive right up into the hills parks without dealing with much city traffic." There are also a number of smaller city parks in the neighborhoods around Foothill Square. Spots like McCartney Park and Verdese Carter Park have playgrounds and athletic fields.
