Interesting architecture and convenient accessibility on Oakland's east side

With walkable streets and views of the Oakland Hills ridgeline, Frick is an active east-side enclave of character-rich homes and convenient accessibility. Positioned 10 miles outside Downtown Oakland, it’s within walking distance of parks, public schools and a liberal arts college known for its lively, historic campus. Halfway between San Leandro Bay and woodsy sprawls of mountain ranges, it’s as easy to get some fresh air as it is to run an errand or sit down for a bite to eat in this well-positioned suburb. “It’s conveniently located, a friendly community and a great area to walk dogs and meet neighbors,” says Michele Senitzer, a real estate agent at Compass Real Estate, who frequently works in the area.

Home designs with European influence

“It’s a beautiful neighborhood known for charming homes and interesting architecture,” Senitzer says. Frick’s architectural layout is largely comprised of one- and two-story stucco bungalows in European-influenced Craftsman and Tudor styles with charming turrets and bay windows. Most homes here were developed from 1920 to 1950, but many have been remodeled to include modern finishes and layouts with high ceilings and wood floors. Prices in Frick typically range from $500,000 for a small spot to over $1 million for an early 20th-century stunner on the coveted Picardy Drive, locally known as “Christmas Lane” for its stretch of storybook properties designed by prominent era architect Walter Dixon, a popular destination during the winter season.

Picardy Drive is "Christmas Lane" during the holidays

Frick makes all the East Bay’s best-of lists for holiday light tours - visitors funnel into the light-strung Picardy Lane throughout the winter season. These striking homes wrap around three islands, converging at the center where a towering, slightly slanted 100-year-old cedar stands, serving as the community Christmas tree. Buying a home between Seminary and 55th Avenues means committing to spreading the joy each year with a bright display.

Minutes to nature preserves, the zoo and Oakland Coliseum

Frick is only a short drive to Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, a rambling oasis of 150-foot-tall Redwood trees with hiking, biking and horse-riding trails, and the Oakland Zoo, a spacious wildlife conservation park with exotic animals. Sports fans and music lovers travel a few miles west to Oakland Coliseum, to catch an Oakland A’s game or an outdoor concert. Concordia Park is at the heart of the community, where kids play on the basketball courts and athletic fields rimmed with towering palm trees. Locals also host birthday parties and seasonal celebrations on the grassy spread. Evergreen Cemetery is right across the street, the second-largest burial ground in the city and widely known to house the Jonestown Memorial, honoring the victims of the 1978 massacre.

Walking-distance to trendy eateries and neighborhood mainstays

East Oakland is known for its restaurant scene, highlighting cuisines from around the globe. Quirky, casual restaurants like the trendy Thai outpost, Old Weang Ping and the long-standing sandwich spot Mill’s Hoagie and Deli Shop line the busy surrounding roads, within walking distance for most Frick locals. It’s also about two miles from the region’s renowned Taqueria El Paisa, an East Oakland institution that has appeared in the Michelin Guide, famous for its saunders, a carnitas-style taco. Shop Rite Supermarket is the neighborhood’s nearest grocer, less than a mile away, anchoring the Seminary Point shopping center alongside a pharmacy, a gym and a few eateries. Commercial destinations quickly stack up as locals make their way west toward the city center and the busy International Boulevard.

Get around on MacArthur Freeway

With quiet, sidewalk-lined streets, homeowners can get around on foot or bike to the many nearby destinations. Frick is also minutes from Interstate 580, also known as the MacArthur Freeway, which connects locals to Downtown Oakland, scenic Lake Merritt and the Oakland Museum of California. Most homeowners here are drivers, but it’s easy to catch the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) train at Oakland Coliseum, 2 miles away, shuttling passengers anywhere they need to go from San Francisco to San Jose. City buses also make frequent stops along the neighborhood’s main corridors.
