Along International Boulevard in Oakland’s southeast reaches is Iveywood, an urban, primarily residential neighborhood of over 3,500. Multiple public schools and businesses coexist with historic houses on Iveywood’s several dozen loosely gridded blocks, which most locals can walk from end to end in 20 minutes.
Iveywood began in the early 20th century as a dense, urban housing development deemed “The Cream of East Oakland” in newspaper advertisements. Many homes from its early days still stand, while home construction has continued in the neighborhood through this century. Cape Cod cottages and narrow bungalows with Craftsman touches are among the most common house styles. You’ll also find stucco-sided Mission Revival cottages, the occasional Tudor and a few larger, newer Colonials with attached garages.
As realtor Rosel Trolan with Century 21 Real Estate Alliance notes, homes in this part of town are far less expensive than Oakland’s typical, averaging around $560,000. “This area is one of the most affordable places in the East Bay,” she says. “The Bay is very expensive, and it’s just more affordable here.” Move-in-ready homes start around the mid-$400,000s, which might get you a two-bedroom, 720-square-foot bungalow from 1910. On the pricier end, a well-maintained, three-bedroom 2000s Colonial could cost over $750,000.
Three schools (two public and one charter) operate in Iveywood, giving many students a quick walk to class. Kindergarten through fifth graders can attend Reach Academy before progressing to Elmhurst United Middle School for grades six through eight. Both are in the neighborhood’s northern section and have C-minus grades from Niche. Aspire Monarch Academy, part of the Aspire Public Schools charter school collective, has a B-minus and offers an alternative K-5 education. For older students, Castlemont High School — also with a C-minus from Niche — sits about a mile to the north. Its roughly 750 students can enroll in career-preparation programs like Sustainable Urban Design Academy, teaching teens how to transform their communities through design thinking.
Outdoor recreation in the neighborhood is restricted to the fields behind Elmhurst United Middle, including a baseball diamond and a soccer pitch. Immediately north, however, is Verdese Carter Park, a green space taking up an entire city block. The park’s northern section includes two well-maintained basketball courts and a sand-filled playground, while a playfield with a baseball backstop comprises the southern half. With Oakland’s temperature rarely exceeding the mid-70s or dropping below the mid-40s, Verdese Carter Park offers a pleasant, year-round outdoor experience.
Locally owned businesses in Iveywood include small stop-and-shop groceries like Lucky Two Market. Panaderia El Pueblo offers baked goods and custom cakes, while Taqueria El Cruzero is a mobile taco stand where you can load up on meats and other eats. Friendly faces populate service providers like Latina Salon, where patrons with all hair lengths and types can enjoy a laugh-filled conversation while getting a new ‘do. Other businesses in the center of downtown Oakland are about 15 minutes away by car. Locals also have immediate access to the AC Transit bus system, offering about a 45-minute commute downtown. “The area’s close proximity to public transportation is one of the key selling points for people,” Trolan says.
