Melrose Heights
Colorful row homes and tree-lined streets
Melrose Heights' wide neighborhood streets are lined with tall native California trees, from pines to oaks, and feature rows of colorful homes with inviting front porches and lush flower gardens. While small stucco bungalows dating back to the early 20th century make up most of the housing types, larger Mediterranean and Victorian-style homes are also common. Home prices typically range between $800,000 and $1 million.Community greens spaces and creekside parks
There are three parks within walking distance of the Melrose Heights neighborhood. Maxwell Park features a playground against colorful mosaic murals and tall palm trees. Brookdale Park is a community greenspace featuring grassy hillsides, a playground, athletic courts and shaded picnic areas. Nearby is Courtland Creek Park, a small woodsy area with a walking trail that runs along a scenic creek. Plus, San Leandro Bay, with its beaches, boat launches and scenic trails, is about 2.5 miles west of the neighborhood.Public schools with career technical education programs
Students may attend Horace Mann Elementary School, followed by Frick United Academy of Language, both of which get a C-minus score from Niche. The C-plus-rated Fremont High School offers an AVID college readiness program and career technical education programs in auto technology, business, culinary arts and engineering.Local neighborhood eateries and Mexican-focused grocery stores
Melrose Heights has a few neighborhood eateries. Green House Bakery is a micro-bakery serving small-batch handmade pastries. "It's a complete must in the neighborhood," says Kielaya Carswell, a local librarian at the Oakland Public Library: Melrose Branch. Ruth's Buka, "food from the root," is a family-run Nigerian restaurant that serves Jollof rice, a variety of stews and pepper soup featuring fish, chicken, beef or goat. Luis's Coffee Shop is just outside of the neighborhood, known for its made-from-scratch breakfast offerings. Around these restaurants are small businesses like retail stores, beauty salons and nail salons. For groceries and other household items, there’s a nearby Cardenas Market, a Mexican grocery store, known for its juice bar and homemade tortillas, or the neighborhood Shop Rite Supermarket.Multiple bus stops and next to Interstate 580
There are several Alameda-Contra Costa Transit bus stops in the area for getting around East Oakland and to the BART Fruitvale Station, where light rail routes lead as far north as Richmond and as south as San Jose. Interstate 580 and Interstate 880 border the neighborhood for driving into downtown Oakland, Alameda and San Francisco, all less than 20 miles away. Downtown Oakland is about 8 miles north of Melrose Heights, while the San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport is about 6 miles south. Highland Hospital, the closest medical facility, is about 4 miles away.Community events at the neighborhood library
The Oakland Melrose Branch Library puts on many events throughout the year, including weekly art workshops and children's storytimes. The library also hosts festive holiday events, including a Halloween pumpkin carving and costume contest for kids each fall. Other city-area events take place in downtown Oakland, particularly at the Fox Theatre, which holds numerous big-time musical performances throughout the year.
