Merriewood
Volcanic rock, hiking and redwood forests
The neighborhood’s uncrowded natural setting is a draw for homebuyers who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Old oak trees, coastal vegetation, foxes and coyotes are a common sight along the neighborhood’s rocky hillsides. “If you live anywhere in this area, you’re choosing to live among wildlife,” Pembleton says. Merriewood is bordered in the east by Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve, a 938-acre mountain park that offers miles of trails that wind across grassy hills and volcanic rock formations. It’s only 5 miles from Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, a massive park with some of the oldest coast redwoods left in the East Bay. For recreation, residents can head to nearby Montclair Park. The park has a central pond where visitors can see ducks, geese, fish and turtles. It’s also home to a skateboard ramp, picnic tables, playgrounds and tennis and basketball courts.Homes in the hills overlooking the city
Homes are situated along narrow roads that twist and turn through low hills dotted with tall trees, brush and foliage. “The amazing thing about Merriewood is that you have all these cabins that were built in the 1930s. It gives the neighborhood a lot of character,” Pembleton says. Many homes have been built into the hillsides, offering views of the landscape unfolding below. The nearest shopping destination is Montclair Village, just south of the neighborhood, where residents can walk to independent eateries, boutiques and cafes on Mountain Boulevard. The Montclair Village Farmer’s Market takes place on Sunday and offers a wide selection of fresh produce, flowers and baked goods.Getting around the Bay
