Locals gather at community center, venues near Seminary
Seminary is an urban residential neighborhood near public schools and a vibrant community center in the heart of East Oakland. It’s only minutes from the Oakland Arena, a major city destination where you can watch a concert.
Classic homes with recent updates
Named for Seminary Avenue, a street that cuts through the center of the neighborhood, you’ll find a variety of homes that trace their history back to the early 1900s. There are plenty of classic bungalows and Craftsman homes that were popular at the time, many of which have been updated and renovated with new amenities. You’ll see lots of fenced-in yards, landscaped walkways, street parking, sidewalks and views of the forested Oakland Hills in the distance. The neighborhood is less expensive than the Bay Area median, with homes typically selling for between $400,000 and $600,000.
Walkable to elementary, middle school for some
Students in the neighborhood attend Greenleaf Elementary School and Middle School, which is centrally located and walking distance from many homes. Built in 2007, the school has a modern look. Students can also attend Castlemont High School, East Oakland's primary high school. When it first opened in 1929, it had a medieval style façade that inspired many of the school’s traditions, including the school’s mascot and motto.
Rainbow Recreation Center among options for sports,
If you’re looking for fun activities and parks, head over to the Rainbow Recreation Center, a newly renovated community center with a contemporary look. Inside, you can attend Zumba and dance classes or take the kids to afterschool programs. Outside, you’ll find colorful sport courts, athletic fields, picnic areas and playgrounds. You can also check out nearby Carter-Gilmore Sports Complex, a community park named after the first African American ever elected to Oakland City Council in 1950. With wide-open greenery, playgrounds, benches and baseball diamonds, it’s a great place to take the kids for an outdoor adventure.
Shops and taquerias line International Boulevard
For groceries, you can swing by La Raza Market, a Latin corner store in the heart of the neighborhood, or Shop Rite Supermarket, where you can pick up fresh fruits and veggies. There’s also Walgreens around the corner where you can pick up a prescription or other necessities. Head down International Boulevard, which traverses the neighborhood, and you’ll find casual dining, taquerias and fast-food restaurants. Head south to the neighboring city of San Leandro and can shop at Safeway or visit downtown cafes and bars.
Redevelopment planned for Oakland Coliseum
Oakland Coliseum is a few minutes away, as is the Oakland Arena, a 19,000-seat venue where major touring acts perform. Plans are underway to drastically revamp the stadium grounds with a mix of new housing, retail and other amenities in the coming years.
Train stations and bus stops nearby
Seminary is a convenient home base for commuters. You’re near both a BART train station, an Amtrak stop and a bus route with dedicated lanes on International Boulevard. Take a ride on the bus or the train and you’ll be able to zip around the East Bay with ease, whether you’re heading north to Berkeley or south to San Jose.
