South Oakley
Staying close to nature with nearly a dozen parks
South Oakley is filled with green spaces, and Creekside Park has an array of activities to try. There’s a skatepark with rails and ramps, a soccer field and bocce ball courts. A community garden occupies one corner with over two dozen plots for growing flowers, produce and more. A BMX track runs along one side, over the Mike Carlson Bridge and connects to the multi-use Marsh Creek Regional Trail. Nunn-Wilson Family Park is home to a large playground, a splash pad and a baseball diamond. It also has the Koda Dog Park. This manicured area contains agility equipment that encourages dogs to socialize and play. The Delta De Anza Regional Trail runs just above the neighborhood, following the path of the Contra Costa Canal. It also parallels the journey of early Spanish explorers who visited the region in the 1700s. The paved multi-use pathway is popular with people wanting a quiet stroll or a quick bike ride.Nearby groceries, eateries and shopping centers
While the neighborhood is almost entirely residential, numerous shopping and dining options are nearby. Locals can choose from grocers like La Michoacana Meat Market, WinCo Foods and Grocery Outlet Bargain Markets. For fashion, furnishings and fun, Sand Creek Crossing and The Streets of Brentwood are large shopping centers with stores like Chicos, Ulta and Home Goods. AMC Brentwood 14 shows the latest movies in comfortable surroundings. Also, there are plenty of restaurants. Sabrina’s Pizzeria has been serving New York-style pies for over a decade. Tortas Ahogadas El Tio is known for flavor-filled carnitas, sopes and menudo. In downtown Oakley, Punahele Tonnelier combines French and Hawaiian fare with American classics. An urban neighborhood with room to move
South Oakley has a mix of one- and two-story homes built in contemporary, Spanish-inspired and Craftsman-styles. Front lawns are small and tidy, and many backyards have in-ground pools. Roads follow a grid pattern in some subdivisions, while others have gently curving streets ending in cul-de-sacs. “Many of the homes in the area were built in the early 1980s, and you’ll find a lot of energy-efficient properties with features like dual-paned windows,” says Laurie Wexner, a local Realtor with BHG Real Estate Royal & Associates who has 15 years of experience in the business. Homes sell for a median price of $725,000 after 30 days, although prices range from $550,000 to $900,000.After-school recreation and specialized academic pathways
Students attend Gehringer Elementary School, O’Hara Park Middle School and Freedom High School. Gehringer Elementary earned a B-minus rating from Niche. C-plus-rated O’Hara Park Middle partners with the city so children can attend twice-weekly after-school recreation programs at the Oakley Recreation Center. Freedom High has a B rating and operates three academies with over a dozen career pathways.State highways and city streets
The neighborhood is bordered by Cypress and Delta Roads and Empire and Sellers Avenues. Laurel Road is a significant thoroughfare bisecting the area, with O’Hara Avenue and Main Street running perpendicular to it. Bus stops dot Laurel Road and Main Street, while bike lanes run along major roadways. Sidewalks connect many subdivisions, making reaching a nearby park all the easier. California State Highway 4 runs just outside the community, giving easy access to nearby cities like Antioch and Brentwood. Train tracks run through the neighborhood’s upper right corner, so people between Main Street and Sellers Avenue will hear the whistle. South Oakley lies 6.5 miles from Kaiser Hospital and 50 miles from Oakland International Airport.Multi-lingual services and community programs
Almost a dozen Protestant and Catholic churches lie within two miles of South Oakley. Some, like Iglesia de Dios Columna de Fuego, have services in Spanish. The Brentwood Muslim Community Center rests just below South Oakley. It offers a full-time Islamic school, summer camps and the Brentwood Pantry, a food bank for all members of the community.
