In the heart of a historic peninsula
In the middle of the Point Loma Peninsula and less than a mile from the Pacific, laid-back Point Loma Heights offers homes in the hills with ocean views. Bordered west by Ocean Beach (known as "OB"), the community is 4 miles from the shopping and dining scene at Liberty Station and the natural beauty of Sunset Cliffs, and a 15-minute drive from the Gaslamp Quarter. Many residents here work at the nearby Naval Base Point Loma.
Homes on the hills with ocean views
Single-family homes are set in the neighborhood's south, on hilly streets lined with palms and evergreen trees. Most houses here are from the early 20th-century, either Craftsman, American Colonial Revival or Spanish-style, but there are also midcentury and newer custom-built versions of these styles; residences set uphill usually offer sweeping ocean views. Single-family homes here typically go for between $1.5 to $3 million. “The homes here don’t have a super high turnover rate because people tend to stay here,” says Danny Gibbel, Realtor with Swell Property. “People find their forever homes here.” The northern half of the neighborhood is full of apartment buildings, but there are also townhouses and condos built between the 1990s and early 2000s, which range from $600,000 and $1 million.

Shopping at a historic repurposed naval training center
About a mile from the neighborhood, three lively blocks of Newport Avenue are lined with locally owned businesses like Cow Records and 1 Oak Jewelry, as well as fresh seafood restaurant Blue Water. Liberty Station shopping center is 4 miles away, set in a Spanish Colonial Revival-style building from 1923 that once served as San Diego’s naval training center. Today, Liberty Station houses boutiques, restaurants, art galleries and a popular public market. Here, residents can stock up on groceries at Vons or Trader Joe’s or dine at the market’s Cane Patch Kitchen, which serves up Creole classics like seafood gumbo. Cesarina on Voltaire Street is a local favorite for their modern takes on Italian classics and vegan options, but the ambiance is what truly sets it apart - a rustic yet stylish dining room with midcentury accents and a lush patio.
