The primary pathway for a historic road
In the early to mid 20th century, Route 66 was one of the original highways in the United States. Before the interstate system was developed, people in droves took this road from Chicago to Los Angeles to see the western part of the United States. Part of that route went through what is now known as the Britton District, north of Oklahoma City. Through many of those years, Britton was its own town. Britton was annexed into Oklahoma City in 1950, and Britton Road, which used to be part of Route 66, is the centerpiece of a revitalization project to restore some dilapidated buildings.
Breathing new life along a corridor
The intersection of Britton Road and Western Avenue is the center of Britton District, and it’s close to where there are new retail, dining and entertainment options that have sprung up in recent years because of the community-led revitalization project. Zero Tolerance Coffee is in the old Owl Court motel building, a popular stop along Route 66 in its heyday. The veteran-owned shop makes everything on the menu from scratch with local ingredients. They’re also known for making their own chocolate since 2019. For live music, 89th Street OKC has been a music venue and events center under various names for the past 30 years. It’s now an all-ages venue, whereas the age to get in was restrictive in the past. Also in the area is Hideout Art, an abstract art gallery and lessons studio.

Wide range of home prices
Britton District’s residential streets extend from the intersection of Britton Road and Western Avenue in rectangles lined with compact, evenly spaced Minimal Traditional style homes. Heading south toward Wilshire Boulevard and Nichols Hills, homes renovated from the 1950s are now worth over $1 million. “Some homes that are on the cusp of Nichols Hills in the southern part of Britton District are priced between $500,000 to $600,000, but as you get closer to Wilshire Boulevard, they’re in the millions,” says Lindsay Greene, a Realtor with Solas Real Estate with nearly 10 years of experience. Renovations of older homes are taking place toward the north part of Britton District. “North of Britton Road, there’s a subdivision called Alta View Addition, where I have flipped 10 houses for young families moving in,” Greene says. “On the south side of Britton Road, it’s moving a little slower but still moving.” Those older homes are priced between $100,000 and $200,000.

Two convenient parks
There are plenty of opportunities for people of all ages to get fresh air while in Britton District. Burton and Britton Parks are within a few miles of the neighborhood’s center. The playgrounds’ climbing structures, picnic shelters, benches and walking paths make them great places for community members to gather and enjoy the outdoors. While the family dog would love either park, the Canine Social Club on Wilshire Boulevard provides a doggie daycare where furry family members can play while human family members are at work or school. For recreation on the water, it’s a short drive west on Britton Road to Lake Hefner. At 2,500 acres, the lake came into existence in the 1940s to expand the water supply for Oklahoma City. Today, it’s a haven for boaters and fishing. There’s also a restaurant with great water views and a skate park.
