Northwood features contemporary homes and access to Piedmont schools
The Northwood neighborhood is a collection of contemporary homes on the northwestern outskirts of Oklahoma City. A recreational lake carves out space in the center of the neighborhood, and students may attend highly rated schools in the Piedmont suburb, about 4 miles away. “You get a lot of young couples, newlyweds, families with young kids who want to get in there for the Piedmont school district,” says Ernie deBernard, a sales associate with The Property Center with 25 years of experience in the region. Amy Wilson, a five-year Piedmont resident, also highlights the schools as a primary draw. “The school district is quite coveted,” says the residential real estate agent with Keller Williams-Yukon, who has nine years of local experience. “And the roads are private, so kids can drive their motorbikes and four-wheelers down to the lake, put a boat in, troll around and fish.”
Spacious yards and large or luxury contemporary homes define Northwood Lake Estates.

Contemporary homes on large lots dominate the property mix
Most homes are in Northwood Lake Estates or Northwood Village, the neighborhood’s two subdivisions. “Northwood Village is newer, and the HOA fee is higher because it has a pool,” Wilson says. With a few exceptions, homes were built within the past 25 years. Single-family houses make up most of the property blend, and a majority of residents own their homes. Most lots in Northwood Village measure under a quarter of an acre. Small contemporary or Craftsman-style homes with built-in garages might fetch $250,000 to $350,000, and larger builds typically cost $350,000 to $400,000. In Northwood Lake Estates, closer to the lake, narrow streets wind past contemporary homes with ample yard space. Large luxury homes here might fetch $700,000 to $750,000. The neighborhood receives a CAP Index Crime Score of 1, lower than the national average of 4.

Students may attend Piedmont Early Childhood Center for prekindergarten and kindergarten, though the school is unrated by Niche. Northwood Elementary serves Grades 1 through 4 and receives a Niche grade of A-minus. Piedmont Intermediate School serves Grades 5 and 6 and receives an A, and Middle School of Piedmont serves Grades 7 and 8 and is rated A-minus. The B-plus-rated Piedmont High School recently renovated to add the Black Box Theatre, a performance space for drama students.

Piedmont Community Park is about 2 miles away
A gated boat launch provides access to Northwood Lake, where anglers cast lines for bass and crappie. The lake is open only to Northwood Lake Estates residents and their guests. “The only people who get on it are in the neighborhood or know someone there, so it’s pretty private,” Wilson says. Residents are about 2 miles from Piedmont Community Park, an official Monarch butterfly waystation. The huge playground and splash pad feature an Old West theme with wagon wheels, windmills and trains. Basketball and sand volleyball courts appeal to older kids, and the outdoor fitness station can accommodate more than 20 people.

Northwest Expressway paves the way to Oklahoma City
Most residents make the 25-mile commute to Oklahoma City for work, shopping and dining out. Oklahoma State Highway 3, better known as the Northwest Expressway, offers a direct route to the city’s highway system. “You get on the Northwest Expressway, and you’re in the city in 25 to 30 minutes,” Wilson says. Will Rogers World Airport is about 25 miles away, and medical services are available at Mercy Hospital Oklahoma City, about 13 miles away.
Restaurants and retail on Northwest Expressway
Residents travel outside the neighborhood to find grocery stores and retail centers. Williams Foods in Piedmont is the closest option, but most people make the 7-mile drive to Walmart Supercenter. Closer to home, a small pocket of commerce on Northwest Expressway includes Tractor Supply, auto parts stores and chain restaurants, including local favorite Braum’s Ice Cream & Dairy Store. Piedmont also offers several casual dining options, and although the neighborhood is remote, food delivery services are available. “DoorDash deliveries are fine in Northwood,” Wilson says. “That’s important to a lot of people.”

Storm shelters offer protection from hail and tornadoes
Hail and tornado risk are relatively high in this part of Oklahoma. A massive tornado touched down in Piedmont and nearby El Reno in May 2011. Oklahoma’s SoonerSafe program provides rebates to homeowners who invest in storm shelters.
