South OKC suburb sits along major thoroughfares
Between South Pennsylvania Avenue and South May Avenue, just blocks from Interstate 44, the aptly named Penn South is hard to miss. “It’s in a great location,” says Susan Brantley, a top Realtor with Metro Brokers of Oklahoma who has sold homes in the neighborhood. “You can’t call it a hidden gem because it’s so close to everything that it’s not exactly hiding.” She adds that homebuyers have been taking notice of the neighborhood recently for both its proximity to the main thoroughfares and its competitive home prices that range from $175,000 to $300,000. And, zoned to high-rated Moore Public Schools and home to a large community park, this neighborhood is a popular one for families.
Traditional ranch-style homes, perfect for buyers to make their own
Sidewalks and brick ranch-style homes line the broad, flat streets of Penn South. The occasional tree juts above the low roofline of the single-story houses, and neatly trimmed lawns are divided by wide driveways feeding into two-car garages. Prices start around $175,000 for a three-bedroom home built in the 1970s but can climb upwards of $300,000 for a four-bedroom constructed as recently as the mid-2010s. One of Brantley’s recent listings, a three-bedroom, two-bathroom rambler built in 1973, just sold for $180,000. “That one sold for a little bit less than what the sellers were asking for, but the buyers definitely got it at a good price. It needs some updating, especially in the kitchen and bathrooms, but the buyers are really excited to move in and redo it and make it their family home,” she says, adding that the house was on the market for less than a week before going under contract. “You don’t see too many houses up for sale in Penn South,” Brantley remarks, explaining: “People move in and raise their families here. You’ll see a whole generation grow up between when people move in and when they move out.”
Westmoore High is highly rated for college prep
Students in Penn South attend schools in the highly sought-after Moore Public Schools district. Most young students attend Fairview Elementary or Kingsgate Elementary, both of which score a B from Niche. West Junior High earns a B-minus, and highly ranked Westmoore High receives an A-minus. With 20 AP course offerings, the high school ensures that students can prepare themselves for postsecondary education.
Penn South is lined by shopping centers and restaurants
With three main thoroughfares nearby, Penn South residents enjoy easy access to tons of shopping and dining options. “It’s easy to get pretty much anywhere in the city from here, there’s tons of good places to go,” says Brantley. For everyday shopping, though, residents don’t need to travel far. Natural Grocers, World Fresh International Market and Sprouts are all on South Penn Avenue within 3 miles of most homes, with even more big-box stores catering to residents’ needs. For dinner, head to Pub W off North May Avenue, just over a mile away. “It’s a great restaurant and bar, one of my favorite places to go,” says Brantley. Unable to choose a dish to recommend, she says you can’t go wrong with any of their salads or hors d’oeuvres.
Residents walk to Siler Park for fresh air
Close to home, Siler Park is a popular place for Penn South residents to enjoy the great outdoors. Nestled in the heart of the neighborhood, less than half a mile from most homes, the classic playground is surrounded by a sunny, grassy field and paved walking trails. “It’s a really big community park, with lots going on,” Brantley says. “There’s basketball and tennis and people throwing birthday parties in the pavilion all the time. It’s a great place to gather.”
Interstate 44 connects commuters to downtown
With its proximity to Will Rogers World Airport, Penn South is ideal for frequent fliers. But the neighborhood is also convenient for other reasons — with Interstate 44 to the west, residents are only about 20 minutes from downtown OKC.
