Just a few miles south of downtown OKC

From rocking chairs on small front stoops to carports and aluminum awnings decorating the midcentury homes throughout the neighborhood, it looks like time moves slower in South Walker. The neighborhood is close to the heart of southern Oklahoma City and less than 5 miles from downtown, with the location providing a key to its appeal.

Lower than the average home price

The below-average home prices make South Walker attractive to homebuyers. At $150,000, the median home price here is nearly $100,000 under that of the greater OKC area. The general range is between $100,000 and $220,000. “This is an established neighborhood,” says Glen Cosper, a Realtor with Keller Williams Green Meadow. You’ll find mainly Minimal Traditional and ranch-style homes in South Walker, many built in the late 1940s and early ‘50s. Homeowners are likelier to maintain their homes than move away or undergo drastic renovations. There are slightly more renters than owners in South Walker, at a 53%-47% clip.

South Walker provides food variety

The neighborhood’s residential streets are neatly arranged around Lighting Creek, which meanders through the center of South Walker with total disregard for the grid pattern. Sandwiched between South Western Avenue to the west and South Santa Fe Avenue to the east, residents have easy access to retail, dining and entertainment options. “This area is the place to go for some of the best Latino-influenced restaurants in the city,” says Jorge Domenack, a Realtor with Domenack Real Estate and a long-time resident of southern OKC. “You can’t beat this area’s location for food.” Stop by one of the many taquerias along South Western Avenue for dinner, then head to Tizo’s Pops and Ice Cream at the corner of South Western and Southwest 51st for dessert. Tizo’s has been a local favorite for snacks and sweet treats since opening its doors in 1973. If you prefer breakfast food, stop by Sherri’s Diner for pancakes. The ‘50s-style eatery has been serving all-day breakfast and made-from-scratch pies for three decades.

From playgrounds to spraygrounds

There’s plenty of opportunity for South Walker youngsters to get outside and play at one of the two parks in the neighborhood. Lippert Park and Mike Dover Park are popular for their playgrounds, paved walking paths and picnic areas, but kids flock to Lippert Park in the summertime to escape the heat at the sprayground.
