A convenient southern suburb
Whether searching for a turn-key or a fixer-upper, Southern Hills has opportunities for a variety of homebuyers looking to settle down just 9 miles from Downtown Oklahoma City. About as far south as one can get while staying within city limits, the neighborhood’s below-average home prices and surrounding amenities encourage residents to stay put, some for generations. Bordering nearby interstates with access to OKC’s public transit system, commuters can find solace in the convenience of the community without the city’s accompanying hubbub.
Renovating Southern Hills
With a median home price of $170,000, Southern Hills is the kind of community where homeowners would rather renovate than relocate. “It’s a pretty big neighborhood, with homes that are a little bit older and a little more traditional,” says Shannon Stiger, a local Realtor with Buckelew Realty Group. “You’ll find a lot of add-ons and conversions where homeowners have turned garages into living spaces.” Many of Southern Hills’ light-colored, brick ranch-style homes were constructed in the 1960s and 70s. Residential streets are not unlike the others surrounding OKC’s suburbs. Folks can expect uniform rows of homes without much tree cover, many providing square lawns with two-car garages and roomy backyards.
Oklahoma City’s public schools and higher ed
Local students are zoned for Oklahoma City Public Schools, beginning at Southern Hills Elementary. Located less than half a mile from most homes in the neighborhood, the elementary school is practically walkable for families of prekindergarten through fourth-grade students. Jefferson Middle School enrolls grades 5-8, located just north in Taylor Park. Both schools earn a C-minus on Niche, while Westmoore High School receives an A-minus. Home of the Jaguars, Westmoore offers students an abundance of extracurricular opportunities including the Westmoore Association of Student Astronomers and Business Professionals of America. Less than 2 miles down the road, Oklahoma City Community College has been a fixture in the community as a center for entertainment and education since it was first established in the early 1970s. Today, OCCC is ranked in the top five best community colleges in Oklahoma.
9 miles from Downtown OKC
Interstate 240 extends east to west along the northern border of Southern Hills, serving as one of OKC’s main thoroughfares. Folks can easily reach Oklahoma Heart Hospital South just 7 miles west along the interstate or find Will Rogers World Airport 6 miles east. Potential homebuyers should note the airport’s flight path and traffic patterns for possible aircraft noise and delays on land. EMBARK bus stops line both I-240 and South Walker Avenue, connecting to I-35 for a straight shot to Downtown OKC, 9 miles north. I-35 also serves as Moore’s central thoroughfare, passing through the city 7 miles southeast.
Endless shopping and dining options
The curved residential streets of Southern Hills are surrounded by shopping centers on all four corners, contributing to the neighborhood’s comfortability. To the north, Penn Park Shopping Center is located across the Southwest Expressway, featuring popular retail spots like Best Buy and Five Below. Nearby, the Southern Hills Shopping Center flaunts a Del Taco alongside globally-inspired options including boba tea and gyros. Folks can find Natural Grocers flanking South Pennsylvania Avenue to the west, as well as a World Fresh International Market and a neighborhood Walmart to the south. Summit Point Plaza on South Western Avenue offers thrift stores and game shops, encircled by chain eateries like the rest of its nearby hubs. From burgers and beer at The Garage to classic Chick-fil-A sandwiches and Braum’s ice cream, residents of Southern Hills have seemingly endless dining options at their disposal.
Enjoying the pitch from Lightning Creek Park
As the home pitch for the South Oklahoma City Soccer Club, Straka Fields hosts practices, games and tournaments throughout the season. Residents may hear the whistles echoing from the fields during warmer months, as amateur footballers tend to populate the green space outside of practice and game times. Just across South Western Avenue, at the eastern edge of the neighborhood, fans and players can enjoy the pitch at Lightning Creek Park, recently revitalized to include 5 new fields. Just north, the Hidden Trails Golf and Country Club offers a private course alongside tennis and pickleball courts. With various membership tiers to choose from, locals can enjoy a variety of events and activities throughout the year.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
