Southwest Edmond
Gated communities old and new
"You'll find a lot of gated communities closer to Lake Hefner," says Laird. Being just 4 miles east of the lake, Southwest Edmond is no exception. For under $350,000, home buyers looking in Southwest Edmond can find millennium mansions with Tudor and colonial elements and up to four bedrooms in gated communities such as Oakdale Park. Communities like this often offer extra amenities to residents, such as in-ground pools and tennis courts. However, home buyers interested in a more rural lifestyle also have options in Southwest Edmond—just 4 miles north of the state capitol. Midcentury modern homes with three bedrooms on secluded and wooded 2-acre lots are listed for under $400,000. At the top of the market are plots for sale in luxury gated communities under construction and neo-Tudor brick mansions with in-ground pools and multiple bedrooms on lots up to 5 acres for around $1 million.Excellent private schools
Schools are one drawback in Southwest Edmond, as the neighborhood is on the border of one of the best districts in the state, Edmond Public Schools, yet still within two lower-performing districts, Oklahoma City Public Schools and Millwood Public Schools. Britton Elementary, which received a C-minus on Niche, serves the western half of this 25-square-mile community. Belle Isle Middle School received a B-plus on Niche and is one of the better schools in the OKC District. In the Millwood District serving Southwest Edmond's east side, Millwood High School received a C-minus; however, its athletic department is ranked among the top 20 in the state. There are also excellent private schools in the area, including the Casady School and Mercy School, both ranked among the top 5 private schools in OKC by Niche.Windsurfing on Lake Hefner
Along with the housing development happening in Southwest Edmond, there is also park development. One of the older parks in OKC, Harrison Park, was abandoned decades ago and is now under renovation in the southwestern part of the neighborhood. Until then, residents of Southwest Edmond must make do by venturing a few miles west to the 2,500-acre Lake Hefner with its many surrounding parks and recreational opportunities, including fishing, boating, and even windsurfing. Laird says, "There are three or four restaurants on the lake, so you can go and watch the sunset off the patios. Some of them have live music on Thursday nights. People bring their bicycles or walk the trails. It's just beautiful."There's Chicken N Pickle and more
Shopping and dining are also improving in Southwest Edmond. A giant location of regional chain Chicken N Pickle opened by Harrison Park, with outdoor patios and string lights hanging over pickleball courts where people work off dinners of craft beer and ethically sourced chicken dozens of ways. Cinema and draft house Flix Brewhouse Oklahoma City opened a few blocks away. Neighborhood residents have several grocery stores to choose from. Prairie Earth Gardens is a farmers market open year-round on Saturdays and most of the week during spring and summer. On the neighborhood's south side is Braum's Fresh Market.Quick drive to the state capitol
The Oklahoma State Capitol is a straight shot down US Route 77, or the Broadway Extension Highway, which borders the western edge of Southwest Edmond. For longer drives, residents can hope on Interstates 44 or 35, both of which border the area. The Route 18 bus on OKC's Embark public transportation system runs along Route 77, taking riders downtown in under 20 minutes.McBride Orthopedic Hospital
The large campus of McBride Orthopedic Hospital, which specializes in orthopedics and sports medicine, sits on the western edge of Southwest Edmond, serving as a place for employment and healthcare for many locals.
