Summit Place has suburban living close to schools, shopping and dining

The gentle hills in northwestern Oklahoma City’s former prairie land are a far cry from towering mountains, but Summit Place offers peak convenience. Roughly 2 miles south of the John Kilpatrick Turnpike, the northwestern OKC suburb offers quick access to shops, restaurants and schools. “People love this part of the city because you’re close to so much here,” says Jennifer Miracle-Hodge, a sales associate with ERA Courtyard Real Estate. “There’s Lake Hefner, the Kilpatrick Turnpike and really good schools super close by. It’s just in a really good location, no matter what you’re looking for.”

Waterfront dining at Redrock Canyon Grill

The neighborhood’s location places shops, restaurants and grocery stores within a couple miles of most homes. Homeland, Crest Foods and Walmart are all less than a mile from Summit Place. Fast casual restaurants line Rockwell Avenue just outside the community. Tucker’s Onion Burgers specializes in Oklahoma’s signature sandwich — thin beef patties smashed atop piles of thinly sliced onions until the onions are caramelized and topped with cheese. San Marcos Mexican Restaurant is next door and serves up Mexican classics and margaritas. “There’s lots of really good restaurants on Lake Hefner — and at Summit Place, you’re very, very close to Lake Hefner,” Mendenhall says. “Louie’s and Redrock are fantastic staples. Redrock has an amazing menu. During COVID they released some of their recipes for some of their top dishes. We recreated their Redrock chicken at home, so I have a special place in my heart for that restaurant.”

Hefner Middle School receives a B, while Putnam City North High School receives a B-plus and is directly across the street from the neighborhood. The high school features 27 honors and advanced placement classes. Kathy Parker, a long-term resident of northwest OKC and a Realtor with eXp Realty, says both her children benefitted from attending the local high school. “College was a breeze for them because they got a good education and took a lot of AP classes,” she says.

Fun on and off the water at Lake Hefner

Residents don’t have to leave the neighborhood for fun, with two pools, a playground and two tennis courts. Outdoor enthusiasts head to Lake Hefner about 4 miles southeast for activities both on and off the water. “The options are basically endless,” says Kristina Moosavi, broker and owner with Re/Max Lifestyle. “You can sail, hang out on the beach, fish, bike along the trails. There’s even a golf course if you like to golf.” Stars and Stripes Park is further south on the lake, about 6 miles from the neighborhood with paved walking and biking paths, a skatepark and a playground. Nature lovers head to Martin Park Nature Center or Bluff Creek Park, both about 3 miles east, to immerse themselves in trails that wind through woods and grasslands.

Ranch-style homes from the '80s

Rows of neat, closely spaced brick homes line the quiet residential streets. Most houses were built in the mid-1980s and feature the hallmarks of traditional Oklahoman suburbs, from wooden privacy fences to attached two-car garages. Shasta Lane and Summit Drive, two of the neighborhood’s major roads, are lined with sidewalks. Ranch-style homes populate the neighborhood and feature contemporary, traditional and Tudor Revival-inspired design elements. There are also raised ranch-style and contemporary two-story homes. Original ranch-style homes can cost between $215,000 and $270,000. Two-story homes can range from $250,000 to $320,000. Homes in any style with modern updates or amenities such as a pool can cost between $265,000 to $340,000. Homeowners are required to pay a monthly $24 HOA fee.

Annual Fourth of July bash

Outside of meeting for tennis and hangouts by the pool, neighbors get together for events like the annual neighborhood garage sale. The Fourth of July is a special occasion, celebrated with a parade and cookout at the pool.

Easy access to the John Kilpatrick Turnpike

The John Kilpatrick Turnpike, also identified as Interstate 344, is a major OKC artery that forms a semicircle around Oklahoma City and runs counter-clockwise from I-240 to I-35. The turnpike connects to I-235 to the east, which drivers take 19 miles southwest to get to downtown OKC. Most travelers take to the air from Will Rogers World Airport about 19 miles south. Medical care is less than 4 miles east at Mercy Hospital Oklahoma City.
