A residential hub in northern OKC

In Zachary Taylor, the neighborhood name is a tale of two Taylors. Zachary Taylor Elementary School — named for the 12th U.S. president — opened its doors in 1950, and a community soon sprang up around it. Eventually, the school was shuttered and demolished, at which point Zach D. Taylor Park took its place — this time named in honor of a local figurehead, the former executive director of the Association of Central Oklahoma Government. “The odd thing about Oklahoma City is that the older the neighborhood is, the less likely the subdivision name has anything to do with what people actually call it,” says longtime OKC resident Jim Miller, a Realtor with Keller Williams Elite. After all, Miller says, branding neighborhoods by name is a "relatively new concept for the city." Neighborhood name aside, the community has a strong sense of self. “It has a pretty uniform character,” Miller says. “The houses are all about the same size, they look about the same, and most people who look to buy here will be looking for the same things: convenience and opportunity.”

Close to the Western Avenue restaurant and retail corridor

Situated in the curve where Route 66 meets Interstate 235, the neighborhood offers easy access to shopping, dining and entertainment. “You can jump right on the highway from here,” Miller says. “It’s a nice place to live to get anywhere fast.” Residents can start the day with a cinnamon roll and a cup of coffee at the cozy Shartel Café. “Up and down Western Avenue there’s a bunch of classic restaurants and even some clubs,” Miller adds. “There’s a Hideaway Pizza nearby, which is an Oklahoma favorite that started in Stillwater and has locations all over the place now.” Whole Foods is 1 mile north on Western Avenue. The Western Avenue corridor has restaurants like Sushi Neko, widely recognized as one of the best sushi spots in OKC, and shops like Antique Avenue Market, a vintage boutique with furniture, art and décor. Retail therapy is available at Penn Square Mall and Belle Isle Station, two shopping centers a little over a mile west of the neighborhood.

Zach D. Taylor Park and the Adventure District

The neighborhood is anchored by Zach D. Taylor Park, an expansive park with walking trails, a playground and a pavilion. Douglas Park, half a mile south, is a relaxing spot for picnics in the shade, dog walks and sledding in the winter. Three miles east, the burgeoning Adventure District is home to the Oklahoma City Zoo, Remington Park Racetrack and Casino, and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Plus, the district will soon host the softball and canoe slalom competitions for the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Bishop McGuinness High School receives an A-plus

On the border between northwest Oklahoma City and the urban core, students in the neighborhood have their pick of schools. “There are about 27 different districts that cover OKC or parts of OKC, and the Oklahoma Public Schools district itself covers just about half of town,” Miller says. Students are primarily served by King Elementary School, Moon Middle School and Douglass High School, public schools in the OKCPS system that all receive a C-minus from Niche. Several charter schools serve the district, too. “People that live around here, or who are trying to live around here, they’re often looking for their kids to go to Cleveland Elementary, Belle Isle Middle and Classen School of Advanced Studies High,” Miller says, adding that the highly sought-after charter schools are public but require applications. Cleveland Elementary receives a C, Belle Isle Middle a B-plus, and Classen SAS an A-minus. Bishop McGuinness High School — what Miller calls “the true highlight of the area” — is rated A-plus and was established in 1950 as a religious institution open to all students, regardless of religious preference. “There are other Catholic schools in the area that are more economical, but a lot of kids that go to McGuinness aren’t even Catholic because of the quality of education there,” Miller adds.

Brick ranch-style and split-level homes

Zachary Taylor has the hallmarks of a midcentury suburb, from its classic red-brick ranch-style homes and split levels to its broad front lawns lined with towering post oaks and fenced-in backyards. “It has not quite hit the remodel boom that some of the nearby neighborhoods have, so there’s a lot of opportunity here,” Miller says, pointing to renovations and investment opportunities. Prices range from $180,000 to $280,000.

Five miles from downtown OKC

Downtown Oklahoma City is less than 5 miles south on Interstate 235, which residents can easily access via Northwest 50th Street. The closest hospital, Integris Health Baptist Medical Center, is about 3 miles west, and Will Rogers World Airport is 13 miles south. The nearest Embark bus stops are on Northwest 50th Street on the neighborhood’s southern border, less than a half mile away of most homes.
