A countryside feel with city access
Old Bridge Township provides that rare balance of suburban seclusion and urban convenience. As the sound of New York and Newark city traffic fades into the distance, the landscape opens into rolling green fields and pockets of woodland. “I’m not really sure you can call Old Bridge the country, since you’re still just outside the city,” says Tanya Cleary, Realtor at Weichert Realtors and a longtime resident. “But it still manages to feel like the country, and the natural beauty on offer here attracts people from the city all year.” Encompassing an area large enough to warrant four post offices, Old Bridge Township isn’t short on space—but doesn’t sacrifice community either. “We’re a quiet community, but we’re a community that looks out for each other. I can count on my neighbors, and it’s a remarkably diverse and welcoming place,” Cleary adds. Residents embrace a lifestyle that harmonizes the tranquility of the countryside with the conveniences of city life, making Old Bridge a place that truly feels like home.

From smaller Cape Cods and ranch-style homes to larger colonials
Old Bridge’s unique atmosphere—one that blends the old with the new—also extends to the housing market. “There’s everything from bungalows to mini mansions around here,” says Cleary. “The prices are a little higher than some other nearby neighborhoods, but that’s partly because of all it offers and the access it provides. You might find something for a little cheaper further south, but you’d be giving up some of that access.” True to Cleary’s description, prospective homebuyers will find Cape Cods, ranch styles, and bi-levels to larger Colonial Revivals and new-traditional estates. Examples of the former can range from $350,000 to $700,000, while Colonial Revivals range from $500,000 to $800,000. New-traditional builds, usually larger homes that sit on significant acreage, range from $800,000 to $1.3 million. Grand modern estates, or homes on especially large tracts of land, can occasionally reach as high as $2 million. The housing market is active, with homes often selling quickly due to high demand. "A lot of people come from Brooklyn and the city in general for the space and the lower price," Cleary notes.

Proximity to New York City and popular beaches
The New Jersey Turnpike and the NJ Transit Bus system gives residents straightforward access to New York City. Laurence Harbor Beach sits seven miles away, while Sea Bright and Sandy Hook are both less than 25 miles away—making for easy escapes to the beach. Those in search of a vacation beyond the shore have options as well, with Cleary explaining: “Jersey Shore is a big draw obviously, but a lot of people also get away to places like the Thomas Edison Center in Menlo Park. And of course, people try to get to Atlantic City as often as they can.” In addition to being the commercial corridor of the township, Route 9 also makes for a simple way to get across town and beyond. “It’s cliché to say, but Old Bridge is the kind of place where you can find just about anything you want. And if you can’t find it here, you can almost certainly find it just a short drive up to the city.” Newark Liberty Airport is 23 miles from the township, while HMH Old Bridge Medical Center—a significant medical office and employer in the area—is directly accessible from within town.

Ponte Vecchio serves up classic Italian cuisine
The main shopping artery of Old Bridge is along Route 9, a bustling corridor lined with a mix of big-box retailers and local establishments. “If you want it, you can probably find it,” says Cleary. “Old Bridge has a lot, and what it doesn’t have is just a short drive away.” The area boasts two Walmarts and a brand-new ShopRite that serve as the places where residents restock the pantry. Dining options are plentiful and diverse, with Old Bridge known for its array of Italian restaurants. One example is Ponte Vecchio, a classic Florence-inspired eatery with elevated takes on seafood and classic pasta. Pine Tavern, also along Route 9, offers hearty meals and a welcoming atmosphere for enjoying good food and drinks with friends. Sweet treats are close by as well, with the recent arrival of Duck Donuts delighting locals who enjoy the customizable delights.

Old Bridge Day, a celebration of the community
Seasonal events like the Italian American Festival and Old Bridge Day bring residents together to celebrate with live music, food stalls and cultural performances. Pumpkin patches and farmers’ markets pop up as the weather cools down, filling the air with the sweet scent of ripe apples and freshly baked goods. "Around October or so, you start to see a lot of people come up from the city," says Cleary. "Some come to pick their own pumpkins, and others just to appreciate the beauty from their cars."
