A small suburb built atop old coal mines

The borough of Taylor is a small suburban community in Lackawanna County. It is bordered by the Lackawanna River to the east and U.S. Interstate Highway 476 to the west. The borough was founded in 1790 at the foot of Bald Mountain. It was once home to major silk manufacturing plants and coal mining operations, and in fact, most of the neighborhood is built over top of abandoned coal mines. This history lingers through the gridded layout and uniform architecture found along Main Street. The outskirts of town offer a more rural feel, making Taylor a viable option for those looking for a slower pace of life without sacrificing proximity to major cities like Scranton, just under 4 miles away.

Homes sell "really quickly" here

Most homes here were built in the mid to late 20th century. “A lot of these are old coal miner homes,” says Michelle Valvano, a Realtor with Classic Properties. She’s been selling homes in the area since 2005. American foursquare and gable-fronted single-family homes dominate this area, but bi-levels, duplexes, saltbox and ranch-style homes also dot the streets. Homes along Main Street sit snuggly on gridded streets, while homes closer to the mountains tend to be on more expansive lots. Smaller fixer-uppers can start below $100,000, while larger updated homes can sell for more than $285,000. Duplexes and rare new builds boast a slightly higher price tag, selling for more than $350,000. Still, homes here are typically more affordable than those in surrounding areas and, thus, don’t stay on the market long. “Homes are moving really quickly here. They sell within 30 to 45 days,” Valvano says.

The community recreation space features sporting facilities such as ball fields, basketball courts, and tennis courts and passive spaces such as picnic tables and a playground. McDade Park sits near the edge of the neighborhood. It is a large county-managed space with walking trails, a playground, sports facilities, and shaded pavilions. Next to McDade Park is the Anthracite Heritage Museum, where residents can explore exhibits highlighting the lives of mine and factory workers. For a more immersive experience, visitors can descend 300 feet to explore a restored coal mine. Across town sits the Underwood Skatepark, where skaters and BMX cyclists can shred the park’s xyloid obstacles and ramps. It's located in an old factory building by the rail line. Pine Hills Country Club is also centrally located in town. It boasts a restaurant and a par 71 golf course.
