About Old Jamestown, MO

About Old Jamestown, MO

Old Jamestown is a woodsy residential community by the Missouri River

Old Jamestown occupies a stretch of land south of the Missouri River bluffs and just north of the Florissant and Black Jack suburbs. Established in the early 1800s as one of the region's first settlements beyond St. Louis, it remains unincorporated, with boundaries that roughly follow U.S. Route 67, also called Lindbergh Boulevard, to the south and the river valley to the north. Over the last half-century, Old Jamestown has transformed from farmland and country estates into a suburban enclave where winding residential streets meet pockets of commercial development. Today, Old Jamestown is essentially a woodsier version of its suburban neighbors to the south, offering spacious, contemporary two-story homes bracketed by woods, farmland and the Missouri River.

Modern subdivisions and midcentury ranch-style homes

The local housing stock is varied: midcentury neighborhoods lined with ranch-style homes and split-levels border '90s- and 2000s-era subdivisions of modern two-story properties and even newer developments offering made-to-order one- and two-story homes. "Houses in the area usually have a bit more land and a bit more distance between them," says Realtor and Old Jamestown resident Daryl Holland of Coldwell Banker. "It's generally a pretty quiet area, even compared to other suburbs. Even the main streets are pretty quiet." A few condos can also be found on the south side of the community. Condos in Old Jamestown generally sell for $75,000 to $125,000, while most single-family homes go for $240,000 to $440,000, though some custom-built luxury homes go for $500,000 to $600,000.

Multiple large parks offer opportunities to get outside

Parks follow the contours of Mill Creek, which runs through the center of the community. Champ County Park, located in the center of the community, features a playing field, picnic tables, and a 1-mile nature trail loop that's popular with walkers and runners. Just to the north, the expansive Sioux Passage Park features tennis courts, a playground and additional walking trails. "People like to reserve pavilions in the parks for family reunions and events," says Holland. "For a lot of people, that's their main use: getting together with friends and family for a barbecue or a potluck." On the north side of the park, a boat launch provides access to both the Missouri River and the 2,260-acre Pelican Island Natural Area. Pelican Island can be reached on foot when water levels are low, but it's usually accessible only by boat and gets relatively little foot traffic. It's popular with both birders and anglers and is considered one of the best remaining examples of a mature floodplain forest in Missouri. Both boating and fishing are popular pastimes in the area — no surprise given the community's proximity to both the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.

Route 67 is the heart of the local retail scene

Old Jamestown's developments are almost entirely residential, but there are extensive shopping and dining options just south of the community along U.S. Route 67. The area near the intersection of 67 and New Halls Ferry Road, which divides Old Jamestown from Florissant, is home to multiple shopping centers and department stores ranging from Target and Walmart to Home Depot and Marshalls. There are also dozens of chain restaurants in the area, along with highly rated local eateries like Hawaiian Bros Island Grill and Cugino's Italian Grill and Bar.

Part of the Hazelwood School District

Old Jamestown is within the boundaries of the Hazelwood School District, along with Black Jack, Spanish Lake and most of Florissant. Barrington Elementary and North Middle School both have C-minus grades on Niche, while Hazelwood Central High School has a C-plus. Hazelwood Central offers dual enrollment courses for college credit at St. Louis Community College's Florissant Valley Campus.

Easy commuting via local highways

U.S. Route 67 and New Halls Ferry Road serve as both the southeast and southwest borders of Old Jamestown and the community's major arterial roads. Route 67 connects to state Route 367, which in turn connects the region to central St. Louis. It's a roughly 20-mile drive from the community to downtown St. Louis, and about 15 miles to St. Louis Lambert International Airport. There is currently no public transit in Old Jamestown, so private transportation is needed to get around.
