The rustic side of Old Lycoming Township
Old Lycoming definitely earns the descriptor “old,” as the Pennsylvania community outside of Williamsport predates the U.S. Constitution. Old Lycoming and the neighborhoods of Garden View and Grimesville make up the municipality of Old Lycoming Township, founded in 1785. Garden View serves as the township’s commercial center, Grimesville is a residential village with a suburban feel, but Old Lycoming is a rural expanse of ridges, valleys and scattered homes. Residents here trade events, amenities and walkability for quiet and privacy. However, most homes are no more than 5 miles from shopping, dining and entertainment in Garden View and the city of Williamsport.

Homes on acre-plus lots
About 550 homes are spread across the large neighborhood, but they’re mostly concentrated along key streets such as Grimesville Road and Bottle Run Road. Averaging 1,760 square feet, houses aren’t particularly large. Instead, they boast spacious lots that are typically around an acre in size. Simple architectural styles such as ranch homes and cottages are most common. However, some are contemporary styles from the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s, featuring large windows, angular designs and a mishmash of building materials. Prices begin in the high $100,000s, with houses that are either closer to Williamsport or sitting on multiple acres costing between $350,000 and $400,000. Bottle Run flows through Old Lycoming, but the stream’s flood risk is significantly lower in the neighborhood than in surrounding neighborhoods, according to FEMA.

The birthplace of Little League
Carl E. Stotz Park covers part of the neighboring community of Garden View, where people can access tennis courts, a basketball court and a playground. The park is named after the man who invented Little League in 1939 in Williamsport. It makes sense then that the park has three fields that host Little League games, drawing as many as 800 people on opening day in April. Carl E. Stotz Park is along the Lycoming Creek Bikeway, a 5-mile trail that stretches from the Hepburnville neighborhood north of Old Lycoming to the city of Williamsport.

Churches young and old
For more than 150 years, Buchanan Baptist Church has stood on Grimesville Road. Parishioners have worshiped in the white-steepled building since 1869, maintaining a steady congregation of lifelong members. On the other end of the spectrum is LCBC Williamsport, a nondenominational Christian group that began meeting in 2024. It’s part of Lives Changed By Christ, a church with 20 campuses across Pennsylvania. LCBC Williamsport does not yet have a church building, instead meeting in homes and available community gathering spaces.
Buchanan Baptist Church has been serving the Old Lycoming community since 1869.
Historic churches are found throughout Old Lycoming and the surrounding communities.

Dining out in Garden View, Williamsport
The closest place to go shopping is the Garden View neighborhood. Weis Market grocery store, Rite Aid and Harbor Freight Tools dot Lycoming Creek Road. The road also has a few eateries. Pudgies of Williamsport started in 1981 as a franchise before becoming an independent, family-owned restaurant in 1984. The joint has become a popular local spot for pizza and Buffalo wings. Down the street, Humpty Dumpty Creek Side serves sandwiches and cheesecake, the latter made by Batter Up Bakery, which is based in Old Lycoming Township. Homes in the neighborhood are generally 5 to 8 miles from downtown Williamsport, known for a wider array of restaurants. Heidi Lane, a resident of the Old Lycoming Township neighborhood Grimesville, says one of her favorite new additions is John Ryan Brewery. Opened in 2022, the restaurant serves octopus along with craft beers. “It’s a different cuisine, different dining experience,” Lane says. “We have a lot of the same types of restaurants in town, but they brought a different vibe.” Williamsport is also home to the nearest hospital, UPMC Williamsport.
The Garden View Mall is the closest shopping center to Old Lycoming.
Bullfrog Brewery and other Williamsport restaurants are easily accessible from Old Lycoming.

Local school scores top Department of Education honor
Hepburn-Lycoming Primary School not only gets a Niche grade of B-plus, but it’s also the only school in the Williamsport Area School District to be named a National Blue Ribbon School. In 2022, Hepburn-Lycoming Primary received the honor, the highest given out by the U.S. Department of Education. The school teaches students from kindergarten to third grade, after which they advance to B-rated Lycoming Valley Intermediate School. Williamsport Area Middle School gets a B-minus, while Williamsport Area High School is graded a B-plus.
The student to teacher ratio at Williamsport Area Middle School is 13 to 1.
Williamsport Area Senior High School receives an overall B+ grade from niche.com.

Seeing the Little League World Series
The Williamsport area is usually most identified with the sports tournament it hosts every August: the Little League World Series. Held 8 miles from Old Lycoming in South Williamsport, the tournament brings in the world’s best youth teams from as far away as Taiwan. Hundreds of thousands of people come to the Little League World Series every year.
Old Lycoming is just a few miles from the famous Little League World Series complex.

Getting around the region
Bus service doesn’t reach Old Lycoming, making residents of the spread-out neighborhood reliant on cars. Bottle Run Road leads to Garden View, a neighborhood with a collection of stores and restaurants, and Grimesville Road extends to Williamsport, the region’s biggest city and a hub for jobs, restaurants and cultural experiences such as the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra. In Williamsport, people can get on Interstate 180 to travel throughout the metro, including to Williamsport Regional Airport, about 10 miles from Old Lycoming.

Interstate 180 runs along the Susquehanna River just a few miles from Old Lycoming.
