A college campus in the deep farmland

Roughly 32 miles south of Lansing, Olivet is a rural township that’s home to both families with farms and students attending The University of Olivet – the neighborhood’s central location to other metropolitan areas is what helps the population thrive. “It’s definitely a small community area. They get students from all over the Midwest here, but it’s more the hometown thing that brings people in and keeps them here,” says Real Estate Agent David Reynolds with RE/MAX Hometown, who has over 30 years of experience.

Ample land outside of the town center

Most properties in Olivet are located in the town center. As the population grows, people are beginning to see a mixture of older homes next to modern ones. Two-story traditional homes are found within a price range of $130,000 to $300,000 alongside similarly priced ranch-style homes with driveways. Victorian-inspired homes with towers, arches and high windows still go on the market for around $150,000. Farther out in the countryside, large Craftsman homes with garages are going for $300,000 to $400,000. Near them are farmhouses that come with their own plots of land.

A far drive from major retail

Despite the rural landscape, residents living in Olivet have plenty of options for shopping and dining. Students at the university have exclusive access to the Kirk Center cafeteria on campus, and everyone else can visit the local shops and restaurants along Main Street. Tim’s Pizza serves specialty pies and subs for casual Italian, and Main Street Mixers makes gourmet beverages. Locals wake up with their blended coffees, juices, teas or milkshakes. Whitetail Farms Farm Fresh Market is farther down at the intersection with Butterfield Highway and provides fresh meat cuts for those who like to cook at home. Those who are willing to travel can head 5.6 miles west to downtown Bellevue for more options. “There’s not much here, but Olivet is centrally located near three of the bigger cities in the area, like Lansing and Battle Creek. That’s where people do most of their grocery shopping,” Reynolds says. For even more choices, Charlotte is 10.4 miles north and has expansive commercial retail. Residents grocery shop at Meijer and get other daily essentials from Walmart Supercenter. In addition to the big box stores, there are also several fast-food chains, including Culver’s, Jimmy Johns, Dairy Queen and more.

Access to the university's public fields

In addition to the rolling farmlands and countryside, Olivet has a few opportunities for outdoor recreation. Trenton Shrontz Memorial Playground has a large play area with slides and swings for little ones to explore. Others can toss a frisbee on the large open green space or take the time to read the memorial statue at the entrance to the park. Those who enjoy sports can utilize The University of Olivet’s public baseball field, basketball courts, tennis courts and pool. Lastly, Sherwood Forest Campground and Resorts offers weekend getaways for residents who want to enjoy nature. The grounds has hiking trails through the woods, campfire pits, a fishing pond and more. Locals can visit during their themed weekend events for additional amenities and planned activities.

Fireworks at the firefighter's fundraiser

Every year, the Olivet Firefighter’s Association hosts a Fireman Festival at the end of July. Residents can enjoy food vendors, car shows and family-friendly activities like finger painting – all while raising money for the association. The event ends with fireworks at the ball field that can be seen from throughout the town.

Non-students rely on cars for getting around

While The University of Olivet has a pretty walkable campus along Main Street, the rest of Olivet is spread out to where most residents rely on their own vehicles to get around. US Interstate 69 and Old US Highway 27 both cut through the neighborhood and help people get where they need to go. Anyone needing to travel far can go to Fitch H Beach Airport in Charlotte, roughly 10 miles away.
