Homes from the early 20th century might need some updates

Apartments make up the bulk of Conestoga Community, and most people rent. Single-family homes in the area typically date to the early 1900s. Nationals, Foursquares and bungalows are common, many with cool interior touches like carved banisters and arched doorways. Still, since these places are over a century old, some may be in need of some TLC. A few newer houses are in the mix, too. “You have to do your own homework and drive through the neighborhood and look at the homes,” says Mo Albers, a Realtor with Realty One Group Sterling who has five years of local experience. “That’s where people are investing, and it’s always up and coming.”

The neighborhood’s median home sale price is around $130,000, less than half the citywide median and slightly lower than nearby neighborhoods like East Omaha and Highlander-Long School. Newer or remodeled homes sell from the low $100,000s to the low $200,000s, while prices start at $60,000 to $70,000 for fixer-uppers. “Investors will flip those houses because a lot of them are in really bad shape and they have the ability to turn them into a diamond in the rough,” Albers says.

The center offers after-school and summer programs where kids can get help with homework, participate in sports and go on college visits. Upperclassmen can apply for the Employment Academy to learn job skills and land internships with local businesses. Next door, the Schenzel Community Center has a roller rink and community events for kids and adults. The North Omaha Trail is still a work in progress, but Phase 1 is complete and accessible just a block north of the neighborhood. When it’s done, the multiuse pathway will stretch 8 miles into Downtown Omaha.

The highly rated Central High School started out as Omaha’s first all-grades public school in 1859, and the current building added a new wing for theater, arts and music in 2019. Conestoga Elementary is right in the neighborhood, and Creighton University, a private Jesuit school, is about a mile south.
