At the historic heart of Omaha’s Black community is Conestoga Community, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Omaha. Located within east Omaha and just north of downtown Omaha, Conestoga thrives with a rich mix of businesses, homes, churches and community organizations. “Homeowners choose Conestoga Community because it’s close to the best assets of downtown Omaha,” says Tina Sempeck, a Realtor with eXp Realty. “Imagine being just minutes from the College World Series, the RiverFront and the Kiewit Luminarium. And thanks to the longevity of many of the residents and the historic value of the area, homes really hold their value, so the neighborhood is considered a particularly smart investment.”

Vintage homes and elm-lined streets
Elms dot along the neat, square lawns of Conestoga, providing shade along its gridded streets. While many blocks have benefited from revitalization, most historic homes have been preserved and updated. “With the growth of surrounding commercial areas and the ongoing revitalization of the entire downtown area, it’s a great time to own a historic home here,” says Sempeck. Home styles include bungalows, cottages, American Foursquares, and eclectic two-story houses. On average, homes sell from $130,000 to $250,000.

Burdette Park and The Hope Center for Kids
Burdette Park is a 2.1-acre park with a playground and a community swimming pool. It’s located next to The Hope Center for Kids, a faith-based after-school learning academy for area children. “We provide afterschool and summer programs for ages 5 to 19,” says Joey Wolfe, director of development at The Hope Center. “We have two main academies; one is our learning academy, which is an academically focused program for all ages, while the other is our employment academy, which is a high school program that teaches employability skills to high schoolers and provides them with paid internships in their senior year.” Right next door is the Schenzel Community Center, offering activities and community events for kids and adults.
Local churches
Baptist and Catholic churches are prevalent in the area, with many of them offering community outreach programs and services. “North Omaha has a high concentration of churches, particularly serving the Black community,” says Wolfe. “Around the turn of the century, you had the creation of all these neighborhood churches, many of which still exist today.”
Local businesses with community at the center
Many of the local businesses give back to their community while boasting longevity and an abundance of local and national recognition. Just a mile west of the neighborhood, Big Mama’s Kitchen & Catering is a family-owned restaurant and catering business specializing in soul food dinners, appetizers and desserts. Recognized by the SBA for community commitment, Big Mama’s donates more than 25,000 meals each year. The restaurant also specializes in training adults who are reentering the workforce or have formally been incarcerated. Get-N-Go Fish was founded in 1996 when John Ford, owner of a local convenience store, started serving fried fish from a family recipe passed down for generations. Locals couldn't get enough, so Ford expanded and converted the business to a full-scale restaurant that thrived and gained local and regional attention from patrons and the media.
Styles of Evolution is a black- and veteran-owned fashion-forward clothing store located on Ohio Street, selling suits, formal wear and dress shoes. LeFlores New Look Fashions features men's and boys' suits, hats and sportswear.
