Dahlman, a neighborhood focused on preserving its roots
Back in the 1890s when Italian railroad workers settled in Omaha, they – along with Czechs and Germans – clustered together in an area that would come to be called Dahlman. Found just minutes south of downtown Omaha, Dahlman has preserved its connection to the past by maintaining original architecture and celebrating its cultural heritage. Backboned by local businesses and firmly tethered to the urban center, it offers the liveliness of city living while taking a step away from the busy heart of Omaha.
Original vintage architecture in Dahlman
Houses in Dahlman have weathered the years alongside the progression of the neighborhood, and many of them date back to the early 20th century. Amongst the narrow residential streets, residents stroll the sidewalks with their dogs or venture to the nearest corner store. Many of these homes accommodate the hilly terrain with concrete staircases leading up to the front yard, and there's been a massive effort by the community to preserve the original vintage architecture. Styles include the ever-classic bungalow and mixed material ranch houses, along with colorful and iconic Craftsman properties. Two-bedroom homes typically start at $150,000, and larger restored houses can get up to $210,000.

Finding big-name essentials and local flare
Nearby Vinton Street has a few recognizable chain stops, like AutoZone and Walgreens, but most shops and restaurants are unique to Dahlman. The aisles of Family Fare Supermarket stay busy as people shop for groceries, the neon screens of vintage arcade games light up the bar of Beercade2 and Cascio's Steakhouse – open since 1946 – serves its signature steak and ravioli. South 13th Street is where to be if looking for unique shopping boutiques, these businesses operating in the original brick buildings that have been there since Dahlman's creation.
Orsi's has been an Italian staple in Dahlman and Omaha for many years.
If you're looking for a beverage and a lot of old-school video games, Beercade is the place.

On the pathway to Central High
Dahlman is served by the district of Omaha Public Schools, and children can start their education at Castelar Elementary, graded with a C-minus on Niche. The school regularly hosts Family Night, where they invite family of the students to work on projects and tackle learning games. Children move on to Norris Middle, graded with another C-minus, before finishing basic education at Central High. Central High receives an overall B-plus from Niche and an A for athletics and college prep, making it into the top 50 of Nebraska's best public high schools.
How to get out in nature around the area
At the west of the neighborhood is James F. Lynch Park, which covers 15 acres, and to the east is the namesake Dahlman Park. JFL Park has several athletic fields, tennis and basketball courts, a connected skate park and a large playground. Meanwhile, Dahlman Park shakes it up a bit, with residents playing games at the horseshoe pits and strolling the walking paths. After several years of designing from the community, Omaha's Parks Department is moving forward to upgrade and expand Dahlman Park.
