Dundee is walkable, family friendly and known for historic homes
People who live in Dundee “work hard to preserve historic homes,” says Will Hagel, Realtor with BHHS Ambassador Real Estate. “They love the history, the architecture and the family-friendly vibe of Dundee,” he continues. “It’s also a very walkable neighborhood. You’re super close to restaurants, great schools and cute shops.” Hagel also says that Dundee attracts a number of young families to the area, including nurses, doctors and other medical professionals, due to its location just blocks from University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Distinctive architectural styles in Omaha’s first suburb
Developed in 1880, Dundee is considered Omaha’s first suburb. Its distinctive turn-of-the-20th century, mostly brick homes include Tudor Revival, Colonial-Revival and Georgian. Homes can range from small three-bedroom cottages to renovated and enlarged brick Tudors. Thanks to the historic value of the neighborhood, many homes that come on the market have been well-updated if not fully renovated. A pristine three-bedroom cottage built in 1921, featuring hardwood floors, original moldings and a new lower-level bedroom and bathroom, was recently listed for $284,900. A stately brick Tudor with five bedrooms, four bathrooms and 3,700 square feet recently sold for $735,000.
Well-regarded schools in the Omaha Public Schools system
Dundee Elementary offers pre-K through sixth grade with a favorable student-teacher ratio of 16-1. Lewis and Clark Middle School and its partner Central High School are both International Baccalaureate Program schools that offer required and elective STEM courses. Niche gives Central High an overall A- rating.
Multiacre parks and a community garden draw neighbors outside
Nearby Metcalfe Park is a small but popular neighborhood spot. On the east edge between 50th and 51st streets, its quaint three acres include a playground, gently sloping green space, and a garden with a sundial. Six-acre Walnut Hill Park has a baseball diamond and open green space. Dundee Community Garden opened in 2009 on an empty lot in historic downtown and was thereafter incorporated as a permanent, non-profit organization. The community grows and donates thousands of pounds of fruit, vegetables and potatoes each year to needy residents.

Restaurants in Dundee are often packed, which testifies to their popularity and solid reviews. You’ll find competing pizza joints, bars and grills, and an enticing variety of cuisines including Persian, Thai, French and Italian. A fourth-generation business, they offer flowers and plants for retail and corporate customers. Bibliophiles and small business fans rave about Dundee Book Company. Started in 2017 as a roving book cart by a published author and a McGraw Hill product manager, they survived the 2020 pandemic to open a bright and airy shop on Underwood Avenue.
