A Historic North Omaha neighborhood
Florence, a North Omaha neighborhood situated along the Missouri River, is known for its historic sites. It was here that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) members had their temporary settlement — known as Winter Quarters — from 1846 to 1847. While they continued westward, leaving the settlement, James C. Mitchell saw promise in the abandoned community that was later annexed into the city in 1917. Today, remnants of these olden days, including the Winter Quarters Mill Museum and The Florence Depot Museum, serve as reminders of the area's rich history. While sites like Florence Park also date back to the community's early development, homes here often reflect more midcentury architectural trends. Perhaps most appealing to prospective residents is the community-oriented nature of this neighborhood. Here, locals stroll into the long-running Harold's Koffee House and see their neighbors, and at the annual Florence Day event, many of the key historic spots are open as people gather for parade festivities and a classic melodrama.

Historic buildings and events
The neighborhood is home to a number of historic sites, many of which the Florence Historical Foundation maintains and manages, including the Bank of Florence, one of the state's oldest banks, and The Florence Depot Museum. At the latter, people come during the summer months to learn about railroad development and see an 1890 caboose. Also known for its significant history is the Florence Mill — which the LDS members built to supply their flour and lumber needs. Today, it's known as the Winter Quarters Mill Museum and has transformed into a place where locals can learn about the community's early settlers. It's even home to the Florence Mill Farmer's Market, held on Sundays from June through September. Rasmussen says she comes to the museum for the Omaha North Hills Pottery Tour, which has five stops throughout the region. All of these major attractions are open during the annual Florence Days, where locals compete for first prize by creating themed floats, and the Florentine Players entertain the community with a melodrama, a tradition that dates back more than half a century.

Ranch-style homes and spacious lots
Flanking steep, sidewalk-lined sloping streets are an array of charming midcentury non-HOA dwellings, like ranch-style homes with brick accents. Alongside these properties are 20th-century builds like storybook Tudor Revivals and bungalows with dormer windows and spacious porches. These residences are often situated on spacious grassy lots whose size largely depends on where they are located; homes that sit further from 30th Street are often situated among dense greenery and feature more spacious yards. "The trees are huge and magnificent," says Pam Rasmussen, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices who frequently visits the area. Prices here typically range from $90,000 to $730,000, largely depending on the property's size and acreage. However, properties that sit on multiacre lots have sold for even more than that. The community is also home to some apartment complexes and a trailer park.

Florence Park and other recreational spaces
While Florence Park is now a place where children spend their time playing on the merry-go-round, it was once a town square at the Winter Quarters. Locals can read the plague to learn more about the area's early settlers, or they can stop by The Mormon Trail Center at Winter Quarters for a more in-depth dive into the community's early period. For other recreational opportunities, people can head closer to the river to Filmore Park. Here, visitors get dusty on the baseball diamond trying to hit home runs. The green space is conveniently adjacent to the Florence Community Center, which shares a building with the Florence Public Library, giving people a one-stop-shop for plenty of activities. For camping, locals can go to the nearby Lake Cunningham Recreation Area, where bikers and walkers alike head on a 6-mile or so trail around the water. Visitors can even get a disc match golf game in with their buddies. Golfers here will enjoy being near a couple of options, including the Omaha Country Club, for which they can purchase memberships.

Alpine Inn, Harold's Koffee House and Zesto
At first glance, Alpine Inn may look like a run-of-the-mill neighborhood bar and eatery, but its heavily wooded surroundings and furry visitors make it among the most unique dining experiences in the city. Patrons can order a meal of fried chicken while enjoying a view of the raccoons that frequent the inn's deck space. For a classic retro diner vibe, many locals here head to Harold's Koffee House, whose original 1968 all-caps "FOOD" sign has been attracting patrons for decades. "It's got that good old-fashioned breakfast food," Rasmussen says. "I don't know if I've ever gone there and not seen anyone I knew." She adds, "People from all parts of Omaha come down here." For a sweet treat, people here line up at the drive-in Zesto. It's a place where locals have been gathering to enjoy ice cream with their friends for over 70 years. For groceries, people here can head to Family Fare Supermarket or Baker's, both of which are right outside the neighborhood's boundaries.
