City living in Omaha offers homeseekers a wide variety of settings, from densely populated urban centers to quieter historic areas. The tiny neighborhood of Northwest Community Club offers one of the most sought-after features of any urban area – a location right next to a stunning, historic park. Covering barely ten city blocks, the community offers all residents immediate access to well-loved, historic Fontanelle Park. Not only does this 125-year-old park have a rich past and stories to tell, it’s also a top destination for historians, horticulturalists, fitness buffs and families. Neighbors not only enjoy, but practically depend upon, the benefits of Fontenelle for enriching their daily lives. As Realtor Dick Gibb with BHHS Ambassador Real Estate says, “Proximity to the park is one of the key selling points of Northwest Community Club. People love being so close to it and it’s a great place to make memories. In fact, I used to feed the ducks there with my son years ago.”
Homebuyers and investors alike will find small, but well-built turn-of-the-20th-century cottages and bungalows, some ready for updating and many fully renovated. Yards are neat and small, minimizing the need for outdoor labor. Many homes have open or enclosed front porches, separate garages and large shade trees along paved sidewalks. While the median price for home sales in the first six months of 2023 was about $110,00, updated or fully renovated homes will be priced closer to $170,000. You can find small but updated 1920s cottages, right across from Fontanelle Park, for around $175,000. Completely renovated three-bedroom cottages can be found for around $167,000.
Skinner Elementary offers pre-K through fifth grade and a curriculum emphasizing Math, Technology and the Performing Arts. McMillan Magnet Middle has state-of-the-art technology, living laboratories, computer labs, and an outstanding indoor and outdoor athletic complex. Omaha North Magnet High (also known as North High School) has a B-minus rating from Niche, and focuses on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). It offers numerous clubs, activities, and athletics including football, volleyball, cross country, and softball. North High is one of many historic public schools in the Omaha area and still operates in its original building from 1924.
Originally nicknamed “Suburban Dreamland”, Fontanelle Park continues to provide endless amenities and attractions from fireworks displays and seasonal concerts, to a speakers series in the historic pavilion and fishing in the recently renovated massive lagoon. Its well-appointed 107 acres feature walking trails, basketball and tennis courts, two football fields and a sprayground – a favorite summer spot for local children on hot days.
Urban living offers a wide variety of shopping and dining venues and some of the best are right around the corner. Humble Jumble Thrift Store is a fun vintage venue as well as a community resource of Holy Name Parish. You’ll find everything from clothing and kitchen items to toys and furniture. Urban Casual sells shirts, shoes, hats, sweatshirts and more, and is a popular destination for area students. Southern Spoon, at the corner of Ames Avenue and North 40th Street, is new to the area, but not to cooking homestyle favorites. Its southern classics include fried chicken, barbequed ribs, catfish and cornbread. Less than five minutes away on North 30th Street, you’ll find Cajun Kitchen in a tiny corner storefront. Don’t let their size fool you. They have plenty on the menu including smoked ribs to go, homemade cheesecakes and jambalaya.
Scooter’s Coffee, known for amazingly fast drive-through brews, beans and specialty drinks, is on the corner of Ames and N 30th Street. Aldi, with its low prices on groceries, home goods and seasonal items, is nearby at 30th and Sorensen Parkway. K-N-J grocery store is where to go when you need last-minute staples and local fresh produce.
When your day takes you outside of your new neighborhood, nearby Interstate 75 provides quick and easy access to downtown Omaha and major employers including Offutt Airforce Base, Methodist Health System, University of Nebraska Medical Center and Berkshire Hathaway. And when your day is done, you’ll find it almost effortless to take a stroll through your beautiful, neighborhood park. After all, it is right next door.
