Small-town vibes with suburban amenities in Ona
Ona abuts suburban areas, but it isn't exactly a suburb. It's not exactly a rural community, either. Residents say this in-between space is what makes Ona special: They get to enjoy the recreational and social offerings of a remote small town, with the schools and housing options of a well-developed area. "From a national standpoint, you get a lot more bang for your buck here," says Realtor and appraiser Chuck Boggs III of River Valley Properties. "Your dollar is going to go farther. A $300,000 house here can get you 2,500 square feet on a nice piece of property, and the home has likely been updated."
Ona has a mix of custom new build homes as well as ranches and cottages.

The Ona Speedway and Airpark once hosted official NASCAR races. Nowadays, it's reserved for hobbyists, semipros and community events. "They have an RC field in there, too," says Realtor Lisa Eden of Old Colony Realtors. "My husband flies radio-controlled airplanes there, so that's a destination that I've known about for years and years, but it also brings in a lot of people." Locals often frequent the small track. "The weird thing is that the airfield is right in the middle of a neighborhood, for the most part," Eden says, "but the guy that owns it is really great at working with all the different clubs that can be there. He's very involved in the community."

Some risk of flooding and blizzards
The Mud River snakes through Ona, leaving a string of flood zones along its course. Most residential areas are not in a flood zone. However, riverine erosion and landslides can be a concern for some property owners, meanwhile, lower-lying areas can become inundated during storms, closing some routes for drivers. Road closures can also occur during winter storms. However, the county maintains its own snowplows, and the state's Department of Transportation allocates around $55 million annually for snow removal services.
