Small town life near Oologah Lake
Oologah is a rural town center within Roger County that’s rich in both history and outdoor recreation. What was once territory for the Cherokee Nation and named after one of their chiefs is now an agricultural and energy center that’s also known as the birthplace of American Humorist Will Rogers. Workers and ranchers alike look to Oologah as somewhere to settle down. “As with any small town, we would like to grow a little bit but still keep our small-town feel,” says Oologah Town Clerk Kathy McLaughlin.
Historic homes and newer builds
Houses in Oologah come in many shapes from different time periods. Traditional two-story homes built in the early 1900s still stand and can go for anywhere between $80,000 and $135,000. More modern ones tend to have farmhouse features like large front porches with posts. Newer ranch-style homes have more of a prairie-style influence with stone features and cost around $100,000 to $300,000. Craftsman homes with front gables can also be found in the neighborhood. These properties are a bit bigger and go for $250,000 to $350,000. Anyone interested in building their own home can buy open plots of land in the area that come with a good amount of acreage.

Getting out on Oologah Lake
Thanks to the surrounding woodlands and rural landscape, Oologah has many opportunities for outdoor recreation. “We have walking trails and horse trails, but our main pull out here is the lake,” McLaughlin says. “A lot of our summer activities revolve around the lake. We have a really nice marina for sailboats, great fishing and a beach for swimming.” Hawthorn Bluff Campground is only 2.5 miles from the town center and provides space for camping, fishing and picnicking. A boat ramp and dock let visitors get out onto the water, and there’s an amphitheater for ceremonies. In the town itself, Oologah Park has a wooden playground area for little ones to explore, plus a basketball court. Cool off at the splash pad on hot summer days.
Less than 4 miles away, residents and tourists can visit Will Rogers’ birthplace ranch. The original house still stands and now serves as a historical museum dedicated to his life. As a still-working ranch, the 162 acres of land are home to Texas Longhorn cattle and various other livestock.
