Arabian Nights and brighter days
When famed aviator Glenn Curtiss sought to expand into the real estate business in South Florida, he knew he had to build a community that would inspire its residents. Curtiss drew influences from the collection of stories known as “The Arabian Nights,” leading to what is now the largest collection of Moorish Revival architecture in the country. While 20 of Opa-locka’s buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the area has faced challenges since Curtiss’s original vision. However, the resilient community has turned a page and now draws inspiration from its own residents as it navigates toward a brighter future. “It’s a unique place where you have a voice, and you can make a difference in what you’d like to see get done,” says Alex Van Mecl, resident and founder of the Opa-locka Preservation Association. “This is an evolving community, and homeowners have a direct impact on endearing and long-term positive growth.” Along with a revitalized city government, multiple parks and access to nearby urban hubs have brought newfound interest to Miami’s 8th oldest municipality.

Opa-locka’s housing presents a way into the Miami Area
Opa-locka’s housing is heavily influenced by Spanish and Mediterranean architectural styles, including stucco walls and red-tiled roofs. Ranch-style builds from the 1940s sit on palm tree-lined streets with larger Spanish Revivals sprinkled throughout. Although the homes are modest in stature, they present an opportunity that can be hard to find in the greater Miami area. “The city is one of those rare places where you can still find a deal,” Van Mecl says. “It's nice to know that you can still think of home ownership here.” Single-family houses range between $400,000 and $700,000, while multi-family townhouses and duplexes begin pricing at $250,000. Numerous vacant lots are available to those looking to build their dream house. There are specific builds that contain Morish architecture from the original planned community, though these buildings are limited and rarely reach the market.

Art exhibitions and community events
“The city has a myriad of different cultural celebrations throughout the years,” Van Mecl says. “A handful of residents curate events, and there’s never a shortage of different activities to enjoy for free.” The most notable gathering is the “Art of Transformation,” a 4-day celebration that turns the city into a mecca for black art with world-class art exhibitions on display. “It helps people see Opa-locka from a different vantage point,” Van Mecl says. “There's some movement happening to infuse a lively creative energy into this space.” The first-ever MENA Fest kicked off in April 2024 and highlighted the city’s integral connection to the Middle East and North Africa regions. The event is set to become annual, and live music, local vendors, and an Opa-locka Heritage Trail Museum are just some of the attractions. The community has an above-average crime rate according to the CAP Index, but community events like these, along with ongoing revitalization efforts, have sought to address this issue.

Amelia Earhart Park is the hub for recreation
Amelia Earhart’s attempt to fly solo around the world took place in 1937 when she launched her fateful trip from the Miami Municipal Airport, now known as the Opa-locka Executive Airport. Amelia Earhart Park was developed in 1980 as a tribute to the trailblazer's enduring spirit and serves as the center of recreation in the community today. The 515-acre space is as much for sports enthusiasts as it is for animal lovers. Facilities include multiple athletic fields, a petting zoo, a disc golf course and eight miles of bike trails. Wakeboarders will feel right at home at the Miami Watersports Complex, one of the largest cable wakeboard parks in the country. Ingram Park offers tennis courts for residents looking to work on their backhand. Football fans are just five miles from Hard Rock Stadium's raucous crowds, home to the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.

The year-round Opa-locka Flea Market
The Opa-locka Flea Market is a commercial hub and runs seven days a week, 365 days a year. Bargain shoppers enjoy perusing the aisles of heavily discounted clothing, jewelry and antiques. Chavez Distributors Super Market is a one-stop shop for weekly groceries and fresh produce within the community. While dining options are limited, the established eateries have become favorites among locals. Jackson Soul Food II is a laidback eatery serving up shrimp and grits and classic breakfast food, while Crabman 305 is a popular seafood joint down the street known for its snow crab legs. Further shopping and dining can be found at Main Street Shopping Center, just 5 miles away.

Well-connected transportation routes
“As far as connectivity goes, Opa-locka got it right,” Van Mecl says. The community has multiple transportation routes linking it to South Florida’s vibrant urban centers. The Miami Tri-Rail has a stop in Opa-locka and reaches as far north as West Palm Beach. The rail connects to all three major airports in the area. Opa-locka Executive Airport is right next to the community and is one of the country's most trafficked general aviation airports, though noise levels can be loud at times. Miami-Dade County services numerous Metrobus stops throughout. Interstate 95 is nearby and connects to downtown Miami, 14 miles away. “Opa-locka really is one of the most centrally positioned municipalities that places us right in the heart of Miami-Dade,” Mecl says.
