A mix of old and new in Opelika
Like many neighborhoods north of downtown Opelika, North Hills was built in the 1970s as the city population grew, shortly before it stagnated for several decades. Unlike elsewhere in the city, the neighborhood reopened for new home construction in the 2000s as Opelika once again began to grow. The result is a mix of old and new, a classic neighborhood feel next to newer suburban energy in the same subdivision, all paired with strong schools and proximity to an invigorated downtown.
North Hills' ranch and new traditional homes
Homes in North Hills were built in two phases: The original neighborhood streets from the 1970s featured gentle curves lined by ranch-style homes, before development returned in the early 2000s with new traditional-style homes often sitting around cul-de-sacs. Today, the ranch homes sell between the high $200,000s and low $300,000s, while newer builds vary from the upper $200,000s to the low $400,000s. The neighborhood’s median sale price is $300,000, just below the citywide median of $330,225.

Monkeying around Municipal Park
A mile from the neighborhood, Municipal Park features playgrounds, picnic shelters and the park centerpiece, a kid-friendly miniature train. Named for a creek that meanders through the park, the Rocky Brook Rocket first sounded its whistle in 1955 and still rolls today. However, a truly unique attraction opened soon after the train, when the city built an enclosure for eight monkeys. The monkeys moved out in the 1980s — they were donated to the Montgomery Zoo — but their enclosure remains, a simian statue in their place. “We affectionately call it ‘Monkey Park,’” says Laura Sellers, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Preferred Real Estate. Floral Park, 2 miles from the neighborhood and currently undergoing renovations, will soon include new turf fields, an inclusive playground and a splash pad. Meanwhile, the Opelika Sportsplex is a little over 3 miles away, including a fitness center, a pool, basketball courts and several fields for outdoor sports.

Dining in downtown Opelika
The north side of Opelika is mainly residential, but downtown and its businesses are 2 miles from North Hills. Restaurants like Zazu’s Gastropub populate south of the train tracks that run through the center of downtown — though the train no longer stops in Opelika, the city still claims its heritage as a railroad town. In the northern portion of downtown, traditionally more industrial, breweries and shops like 10,000 Hz Records have popped up. A Winn-Dixie for groceries sits off Fox Run Parkway a little over 2 miles away, but residents can head to the other side of town for more shopping. The Tiger Town shopping center is just over a 5-mile trek and features shops like Target and Home Depot, while the Pepperell Parkway has several big box stores.
North Hills is situated near Zazu Gastropub, a relaxed, rustic-chic tavern that offers over 20 craft brews on tap, along with New American cuisine and wine.

Snopelika's holiday celebrations

Locals say the 72-foot-tall Christmas tree was the tallest in Alabama. “Thousands of people come to that and descend upon downtown for that event,” says Leigh Krehling, the community relations officer for Opelika. “Christmas is a big thing here.”
