North Hills
North Hills' ranch and new traditional homes
Homes in North Hills were built in two phases: The original neighborhood streets from the 1970s featured gentle curves lined by ranch-style homes, before development returned in the early 2000s with new traditional-style homes often sitting around cul-de-sacs. Today, the ranch homes sell between the high $200,000s and low $300,000s, while newer builds vary from the upper $200,000s to the low $400,000s. The neighborhood’s median sale price is $300,000, just below the citywide median of $330,225.High marks for Opelika schools
The Opelika Public Schools district serves North Hills, starting with Jeter Primary for kindergarten through second grade. The school receives an A grade from Niche, followed by B-plus-rated Morris Avenue Intermediate for third through fifth grade and recently opened Fox Run School for sixth grade. Opelika Middle receives a B-plus grade, and Opelika High, rated A-minus, offers career-focused programs in subjects such as marketing, health science and information technology. Southern Union State Community College has a campus across the street from Opelika High, while Auburn University and its 34,000 students are 8 miles from the neighborhood.Monkeying around Municipal Park
A mile from the neighborhood, Municipal Park features playgrounds, picnic shelters and the park centerpiece, a kid-friendly miniature train. Named for a creek that meanders through the park, the Rocky Brook Rocket first sounded its whistle in 1955 and still rolls today. However, a truly unique attraction opened soon after the train, when the city built an enclosure for eight monkeys. The monkeys moved out in the 1980s — they were donated to the Montgomery Zoo — but their enclosure remains, a simian statue in their place. “We affectionately call it ‘Monkey Park,’” says Laura Sellers, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Preferred Real Estate. Floral Park, 2 miles from the neighborhood and currently undergoing renovations, will soon include new turf fields, an inclusive playground and a splash pad. Meanwhile, the Opelika Sportsplex is a little over 3 miles away, including a fitness center, a pool, basketball courts and several fields for outdoor sports.Dining in downtown Opelika
The north side of Opelika is mainly residential, but downtown and its businesses are 2 miles from North Hills. Restaurants like Zazu’s Gastropub populate south of the train tracks that run through the center of downtown — though the train no longer stops in Opelika, the city still claims its heritage as a railroad town. In the northern portion of downtown, traditionally more industrial, breweries and shops like 10,000 Hz Records have popped up. A Winn-Dixie for groceries sits off Fox Run Parkway a little over 2 miles away, but residents can head to the other side of town for more shopping. The Tiger Town shopping center is just over a 5-mile trek and features shops like Target and Home Depot, while the Pepperell Parkway has several big box stores.Snopelika's holiday celebrations
The city of Opelika hosts annual community events like the Opelika Songwriters Festival in the spring. Each December, Snopelika features a festive parade and Christmas tree lighting, all under the gentle fall of faux snow. Locals say the 72-foot-tall Christmas tree was the tallest in Alabama. “Thousands of people come to that and descend upon downtown for that event,” says Leigh Krehling, the community relations officer for Opelika. “Christmas is a big thing here.”Access to I-85
True to its name, North Hills sits roughly 2 miles north of downtown Opelika on Rocky Brook Road. While the area is somewhat bikeable, most of the neighborhood’s residents are car-dependent. Those who don’t rely on a car can call Lee-Russell Public Transit’s “Dial-a-Ride” service, which offers pickups and dropoffs within Opelika and the surrounding areas of Auburn, Lee County and Russell County. I-85 runs through the southern portion of Opelika and heads 100 miles northeast to Atlanta. Most air travelers head to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which offers flights to over 200 nonstop destinations.Low crime in North Hills
Crime in North Hills is significantly lower than the national average. The neighborhood's CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, compared to the overall average of 4.
