Westside
First-time buyers and renters in Westside
Westside has a quiet residential character, thanks in large part to the neighborhood only having one entrance and one exit. Old-growth pines and oaks shade its narrow streets lined with one-story houses from the 1960s and ’70s. The ranch-style homes often come with relatively large front yards and backyards cordoned off by chain-link fences. Prices range from the mid-$100,000s through the mid-$200,000s. Prices tend to be more affordable than other Opelika neighborhoods, which attracts many first-time homebuyers. “You see a lot of rentals in there,” Hedden adds. “The houses you see going on the market often get put back on the market as rentals.”Highly rated Opelika schools
As part of the Opelika City Schools district, Westside sends its students to Carver Primary, rated A by Niche, for kindergarten through second grade. West Forest Intermediate, rated B, serves third through fifth grade, followed by newly opened and unrated Fox Run School for sixth grade. Afterward, Opelika Middle receives a B-plus and Opelika High receives an A-minus. Local colleges and universities such as Auburn University and Southern Union State Community College partner with Opelika City Schools to offer dual-enrollment high school programs.Dinner with a view at Zazu Gastropub
For groceries, Wright’s Market is just across the street from the neighborhood. Otherwise, a Walmart Supercenter is slightly over 2 miles away, and shopping centers are further down Highway 14. Almost 3 miles towards Interstate 85, the Tiger Town Outdoor Shopping Center offers big-box stores like Target and Home Depot and plenty of fast-casual eats. Downtown Opelika has plenty of options for a sit-down meal, including Zazu Gastropub. “Zazu’s is three stories, and I love to sit on the third-story patio there,” Hedden says. “You can see the courthouse from there, and if you look to the right, you can see the train tracks and the train coming by.”Driving across Opelika and Auburn
Westside is relatively car-dependent, though residents can bike along quieter side streets to reach downtown. Lee-Russell Public Transit also offers a “Dial-a-Ride” service to schedule a pickup and dropoff. A mile from the neighborhood, the East Alabama Medical Center is a significant employer in the area, and while doctors and nurses don’t often live in Westside, travel nurses can rent in the neighborhood. Alabama Highway 14 connects Opelika and Auburn, just over 6 miles away, while Interstate 85 is less than 3 miles from Westside, heading 60 miles west to the state capital of Montgomery or 110 miles northeast to Atlanta. Air travelers often head to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which offers direct flights to over 200 destinations.Renovations to nearby Floral Park
Floral Park, the nearest park to Westside, sits a mile away and is currently undergoing renovations. Construction should be completed by the end of 2024, featuring a new inclusive playground, a splash pad and multipurpose turf fields. A mile further, Municipal Park features a miniature train that kids and parents can ride, celebrating Opelika’s heritage as a railroad town. The Opelika area is a well-known golf destination, and several public courses are nearby. Nine miles from Westside, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National has three 18-hole courses and has hosted PGA Tour events. Pines Crossing Golf Course, less than 5 miles away, has recently been upgraded.Songwriters and Snopelika
The city of Opelika holds plenty of annual events, including the springtime Opelika Songwriters Festival. The city also organizes holiday events, culminating in Snopelika, which the Chamber of Commerce puts together every December. College football takes over every autumn in Opelika’s sister city of Auburn, where more than 80,000 fans pack into Jordan-Hare Stadium to watch the Auburn University Tigers.
