Oregon is a quiet river town with parks and basics close to home

Oregon is a laid-back river town of about 3,600 people, known for its easy access to green space and nearby state parks. Located between Sterling and Rockford, it works well as a home base for residents who commute to jobs across Northern Illinois. Even with its modest size, Oregon covers the basics with local shopping and restaurants, so you don’t always have to leave town to run errands or grab a bite.

Where to find classic, midcentury and newer homes around town

With a history that stretches back to the early 1800s, Oregon leans into its roots with renovated classic homes and a vibe that reflects its past. “It has that small town, Main Street U.S.A. sort of feel,” says Tracy Shuman, an agent with Re/Max Professional Advantage. “It’s just a neat town where everybody knows everybody.”

The central and southern parts of the city feature some of the oldest homes, including turn-of-the-21st-century Cape Cods, colonials and Victorians which range from the low $60,000s to the high $200,000s, depending on condition. As you head west, midcentury split-level and ranch-style homes become more common, typically priced from the mid-$100,000s to the low $200,000s. Newer construction is mostly found on the outskirts of town, where contemporary homes run from the mid-$300,000s to the mid-$700,000s based on features like riverside views.

Overall, the median home price in Oregon falls in the low $200,000s, higher than nearby Rochelle, Rockford and Dixon, but still lower than Byron. The city offers dependable infrastructure with reliable electric power, a city-run water system and a municipal sewage system. Regional providers supply internet access via cable and fiber, supporting remote work and streaming.
