A city that sprung from a port
In the early 1800s, the Port of Toledo was established on Oregon's northern banks along the Maumee River. Railroad tracks intersected the swampland, spurring further growth in the form of oil refineries and chemical plants. The area was drained in the late 19th century to create arable farmland, where bean fields thrived. Oregon's port is still active, and the community continues to refine oil and produce crops. This robust economy is part of why Oregon is known today as the "City of Opportunity," home to approximately 20,000 people. Residents range from a broad swath of economic backgrounds, reflecting the broad range in home prices. Commuters appreciate direct access to the big city while maintaining rural or suburban homes. "Everyone here pretty much knows each other here," says Erin Davis, a lifelong resident. "Even older folks literally work with or live next to people they literally went to high school with. It's a super friendly environment."

The industrial economy on Toledo's doorstep
Over the past seven years, Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. has invested roughly $1 billion in building an iron plant in Oregon. The plant's 457-foot furnace reactor tower produces a strong-smelling smoke. Steel mill emissions are generally linked with higher cancer risks for employees and surrounding residents. The Cenovus Toledo Refinery, which Standard Oil of Ohio originally operated, has been a top employer since the turn of the 20th century. Toledo Refining Company operates in Oregon as well. Mondelez International operates a flour mill in neighboring Birmingham, and Heidtman Steel Products operates a steel processing and distribution center. "The city has a healthy economy and is growing at pace with Toledo," says Realtor Justin Spann, who sells homes in Oregon with Key Realty. The hotel industry is also strong along Navarre Avenue.
"A lot of Oregon residents commute into the city to work at companies like ProMedica and General Motors," says Realtor Jeffrey Bockrath, who sells homes in the city with RE/MAX Preferred Associates. In addition to employment opportunities, many homebuyers are attracted to Oregon because they appreciate the community's small-town atmosphere about 4 miles from Toledo's doorstep.

Suburban cottages and mansions on the bay
Oregon’s median single-family home price is $235,000, compared to $122,000 in Toledo and a national median of $420,000. Most Oregon houses are priced from $65,000 to $360,000. The city offers both quiet suburbs and country houses overlooking acres of farmland. There are plenty of mid-century brick ranch styles and cottages, as well as early-2000s contemporary-style homes and newer builds. Overlooking Maumee Bay, wood-frame homes are priced as low as $150,000 and late 20th-century mansions are priced as high as $2 million.
Like any place, the city is not without its downsides. Since Oregon is a freight-heavy area, train tracks pass by certain suburbs, creating some noise. The added expense of living in Oregon can discourage some buyers. "Oregon has some of the highest property taxes in the metro area," says Realtor Justin Spann, who sells homes in Oregon with Key Realty.

Local bars and big-box retailers
Chain and local dining options, as well as big-box retailers, line Navarre Avenue. Standouts include Luckie's Barn & Grill, which serves burgers and draft beer in a rustic interior, and Mexico Lindo, where patrons can sink into a plush booth and sip margaritas over steaming plates of enchiladas. Just off the Maumee Bay, the Oregon Inn is a popular haunt that serves fresh-caught seafood and draft beer. "A lot of people who eat here have come in their whole lives, but you're only a stranger here once," says Anita Wolf, who owns the restaurant. Local farmers sell their wares at Sprague's Farm Market, which is open six days a week.
The best place in town to catch summertime blockbusters is Sundance Drive-In, just off Navarre Avenue. Many residents keep their boats at Harbor View Yacht Club, which has weekly dinners and monthly steak roasts.
The city's most popular attraction is its annual German-American Festival, which has lasted for almost 60 years. The three-day event draws over 30,000 visitors for pints of craft beer, folk music, dances from the old country, wood-chopping competitions and plenty of schnitzels. In neighboring East Toledo, adults can enjoy a night out at Hollywood Casino, which has over 2,000 slot machines and 60 table games.

Investing in protecting the water
Oregon voted to become an incorporated city in 1957, partially to control its own water, and two years later, it instituted a municipal income tax to help fund developments like the water plant. A move that benefited the community in 2014 when Toledo issued a “do not drink” advisory to over 450,000 residents, but Oregon was unaffected. "I used to run water plants for a living, and the Oregon plant is amazing – you could eat off the floor it's so clean," says Erin Davis. "Our water rates are so low, so we will never give up our plants. We actually sell our water to other cities."
The last remaining acres of Great Black Swamp
There are several public greenspaces. Part of Toledo award-winning metropark system, Pearson Metropark is home to the last remnants of the Great Black Swamp as well as an old-growth forest. People sled the park's hills in the winter and rent paddle boats in the summer. Covering more than 1,330 acres, Maumee Bay State Park has a campground, beaches, a nature center and a golf course. A paved bicycle trail connects the high school to baseball fields, soccer fields, a fitness center and the James A. Haley Boardwalk, along Maumee Bay. Youth Little League and soccer teams play at the fields.
Oregon residents experience all four seasons, with humid summers and heavy snow in the winter. The Oregon City Street Department clears the streets of ice and snow. The Maumee Bay rarely freezes, but the Maumee River often does.
