The SCERA Center prioritizes the arts in Orem
After the stock market crash of 1929, communities around the country struggled to remain afloat. Orem, the so-called “Garden City” east of Utah Lake, turned to the arts as a way to preserve morale. The result was SCERA — Sharon’s Cultural, Educational, Recreational Association — a nonprofit arts organization that sought to provide family-friendly entertainment to the Utah Valley. SCERA Center for the Arts opened its doors in 1941, and it still stands today on State Street. Families buy tickets to watch musicals in Showhouse II during the indoor season and lay down their blankets in front of the SCERA Shell in Scera Park during the outdoor season. “Tons of concerts happen at the Shell,” says Emerie Brooks, a graduate of Brigham Young University who’s worked as a Listing Manager at Summit Realty Inc. since 2017. “People will get there early to save their seats because it gets packed fast.” It’s not uncommon to spot familiar faces from church or school on warm summer nights in the park; there are several LDS churches in and around the neighborhood. The Wasatch Mountains tower to the west, promising miles of hiking and biking trails. To the east lies Utah Lake, where SCERA-area residents can walk the Utah Lake Shore Trail or rent power boats.

Mid-century brick homes and million-dollar new construction
To the north and south of Scera Park, prospective buyers will find bi-levels, split-levels and ranch-style homes dating back to the 1950s. Orem’s population grew substantially in the decades following World War II thanks to the arrival of Geneva Steel Works, and families put down roots in the modest brick-sided homes that still stand today. Prices in the neighborhood hover between $500,000 and $600,000, and lot sizes rarely surpass 10,000 square feet. Most homes come with attached single-car garages, and it's not uncommon to spot driveway basketball hoops. To the east of Scera Park closer to the Provo River lies a smattering of larger, early-2000s traditional homes — the tech industry has drawn more families to the area in recent years. Prices for these properties can sometimes surpass $1 million, and large windows look out onto Cascade Mountain.
Treeo Orem, voted Best Independent Living by U.S. News and World Report, lies along Center Street to the north of the neighborhood.

A top school for high school athletes
SCERA-area students can enroll in public schools like Centennial Elementary, Canyon View Junior High School and Orem High School, all of which received a B or higher from the educational review site, Niche. Through the UVU (Utah Valley University) and USU (Utah State University) Concurrent Enrollment programs, Orem High students can receive college credit for high school classes. Several Orem Tigers have also gone on to play for NFL teams and, as of 2024, OHS was also ranked among the top five high schools for Utah athletes.
Utah Valley University is about a mile and a half from Scera Park. With over 40,000 undergraduates, it’s Utah’s largest public university and one of the area’s biggest employers. “UVU started small and just keeps getting bigger,” says Brooks, adding, “People will say things like, ‘Oh, you went to UVU? That’s a good school.”

Outdoor recreation in “Family City USA”
On sunny afternoons, families sit beside the Scera Park pool and splash pad, watching their children play. The 25-acre park is also home to two playgrounds, a frisbee golf course and over a mile of walking trails. Summer nights mean outdoor concerts and musicals at the SCERA Shell Amphitheater, and visitors flock to the park in the days leading up to July 4 for the Colonial Heritage Festival. Observe reenactors in 18th-century garb hard at work weaving baskets and baking bread. Children can play Colonial-era games or pose for pictures with the Founding Fathers.
On Wednesday nights from May through October, over 150 vendors set up under tents for the Sunset Farmers Market in Orem City Center Park. Purchase handmade soap, order dinner from a food truck and listen to live music under the stars. And OremFest — previously known as Summerfest — is scheduled every year during the first week of June. SCERA-area residents can stop by Orem City Center Park to watch the Wienerschnitzel Hot Dog Eating and Pie Eating contests or cheer on their neighbors in Orem’s Got Talent.
Orem — aka “Family City USA” is also home to “The Orchard, ” an indoor-outdoor play area that sits at the center of University Place. Kids enjoy the wooden tree houses, climbable logs and fountain, which projects water in choreographed displays.

Indoor entertainment: the SCERA Center
On rainy days, watch a movie at the University Place Cinemark or head to a screening at the Clarke Grand Theatre, part of the SCERA Center for the Arts. The Center also sponsors the annual LDS Film Festival and, a few steps south, the Orem Heritage Museum offers free walkthrus and guided tours where locals can learn about the city’s early history. More opportunities like the Brigham Young University Art Museum and the Bean Life Science Museum lie just a few miles south along University Parkway.
University Place and dining options along State Street
Home to more than 150 stores including Dillards and H&M and over 25 restaurants serving everything from all-you-can-eat churrasco (grilled steak) to Venezuelan arepas, University Place has become the go-to shopping and dining destination in Orem. According to Brooks, it’s also created a healthy dose of traffic along University Parkway, especially on the weekends. Costco Wholesale and Trader Joe’s are nearby grocery options for residents living closer to the mall, but Smith’s and Target are closer for those north of Scera Park. For a hearty breakfast in a retro diner, head to TRUreligion Pancake and Steakhouse on State Street. Nearby, find Yummy's Korean BBQ & Sushi and Peru 51, where locals can order traditional dishes like Arroz Chaufa and Ají De Gallina.
Located right outside Scera, the University Place Mall offers shoppers numerous retail options.

UTA public transit, a municipal airport and nearby medical care
Although most residents rely on their own cars to hop between neighborhoods, Utah Transit Authority (UTA) buses stop along major thoroughfares like South State Street, East Center Street and University Parkway. There’s also the FrontRunner, UTA’s commuter rail system which runs from Provo to Ogden, passing by Salt Lake City on the way. For long-distance travel, residents head to the Provo Municipal Airport, which offers direct flights to over a dozen U.S. cities on Breeze Allegiant Airways. Drive 45 miles up Interstate 15 to reach Salt Lake City International, which offers even more nonstop options.
Residents can access medical care at Utah Valley Hospital, a 395-bed facility that offers comprehensive brain, spine and neurological care, behavioral health treatments and emergency services. There’s also Timpanogos Regional Hospital, a Top 100 performing hospital in the nation.
