Lake Terrace
From established homes to contemporary housing options
Lake Terrace’s housing occupies a wide spectrum of sizes and styles. Ranch-style and midcentury-modern homes share the neighborhood streets with everything from colorful cottage-style homes to multi-level custom homes incorporating a variety of architectural motifs. “The majority of homes were constructed in the ‘70s and ‘80s, but developers have gone in with in-fill projects, where a home is torn down and replaced, which is why you’ll see random new homes,” says Laube. A variety of higher-priced homes can be found in exclusive communities such as Porter Place. Home prices range from the low $200,000s to the smallest established homes to the low $900,000s for larger new homes. A small community of stand-alone townhomes priced in the mid-$500,000s is among the neighborhood’s newest construction. Other multi-family options include Orange Tree Village’s three-bedroom condominiums in the $250,000 range. The adjacent land is currently under development with a mixed-use project that will include 10,000 square feet of retail space in addition to apartments. The goal is to increase the neighborhood’s walkability amid the shops and restaurants of the Hourglass District.Hourglass District highlights include breweries, restaurants, boutique stores
Breweries and restaurants line Curry Ford Road and make up the bulk of businesses in the Hourglass District. The Commission Beer Chamber and Hourglass Brewing are popular stops in the heart of the district. Highly-rated eateries include Cilantro’s Taqueria, which gets rave reviews for its tacos; Pizza Bruno, known as much for its garlic knots as its Neapolitan pizza and recent recipient of a coveted Michelin recommendation; and the Hourglass Social House, which features the vegan creations of Leguminati and the ethically sourced drinks at Foxtail Coffee Co. If you’re looking for a unique shopping experience in the district, browse the selection of vintage furniture at Apple Core Antiques & Gifts. “Everyone loves the Hourglass District because it’s actually similar but larger and more diverse than the Milk District with its food, shopping and bar scene,” says Laube. For the standard shopping experience, The Market at Southside a mile west of Lake Terrace features several grocery stores, including a full-service Publix, and a Super Target is the featured retailer at the adjacent SoDo Shopping Center.Students have access to top-rated schools
Lake Terrace used to be home to Kaley Elementary School, which was closed amid the consolidation of several downtown-area Orange County public schools. The result was the opening of the nearby Lake Como School, a B-rated institution that serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Lake Terrace students also can attend Blankney K-8, which has been an A-rated school for the past 20 years. Blankney K-8 is adjacent to Boone High, an A-rated school that features magnet classes in criminal justice, finance and law.Small waterfront parks offer an urban oasis
A trio of lakeside parks offers plenty of passive recreation for neighborhood residents. Hourglass Lake Park, Crystal Lake Park and Lake Lancaster Park are tranquil neighborhood green spaces that provide a natural oasis in the middle of the city. Each offers fishing and the chance to watch nature go by amid wooded landscapes. Residents have access to more active pursuits at the nearby Fort Gatlin Recreation Center, which includes a tennis center, a swimming pool and offers youth afterschool and summer programs.Buses easily accessible; trains and planes nearby
Public transportation is available in the neighborhood via LYNX buses, which can take residents into the heart of downtown about 3 miles north. There, they have access to SunRail commuter lines, an Amtrak station and Interstate 4, which provides convenient travel outside the city. The Orlando International Airport is about 8 miles south of the neighborhood.
