Palomar is a verdant boater’s paradise with roots in Orlando’s Jewish community
The lake-laden neighborhood of Palomar, sitting 15 minutes from downtown Orlando, is an exclusive boater’s paradise, rich with mature native greenery, including live oaks, magnolias and queen palms draped in Spanish moss. In the 1960s, this community was developed from retired citrus groves on the shores of Lakes Fairview and Sarah. The developers, Abe and Zelig Wise, were brothers, real estate partners and pillars of Orlando’s Jewish community. The neighborhood began as a Jewish enclave, distinct from the College Park community just south of it. Over the years, Palomar diversified, and various original homes were rebuilt, diversifying the market, too. That said, its old Florida charm lives on.
A neighborhood of vintage midcentury ranches and lakeside custom builds
“The biggest draw over there is their ranch-style houses because many of them are midcentury modern,” says Nancy Bhavsar, a Realtor with Anne Rogers Realty Group. “And they’re on bigger lots than we’re used to here.” These homes don’t come up for sale often. When they do, the three-bedroom properties typically range from about $400,000 to around $850,000. Bigger options can cost over $1 million. The lakefront houses, like the custom-built houses along Interlaken Road, are also rarely for sale. Roughly, prices range from around $1 million to $2.5 million. Flood insurance is not required to secure a federal mortgage for most properties in Palomar, but waterfront properties are often the exception due to low-lying shorelines. Florida’s hurricane season is from early June to late November, making storm preparedness a statewide practice.
Public and private schools are within walking distance
Orlando and unincorporated Orange County are served by Orange County Public Schools. Each school Palomar is zoned for is less than a mile away. Lake Silver Elementary and College Park Middle are graded C-plus on Niche. Edgewater High earns a B-plus and has a magnet program for students interested in engineering, science and technology. Palomar is also less than a mile from Bishop Moore Catholic High, a popular A-rated private school.
Pocket parks, golf courses and a recreation center are within a 5-mile drive
Interlaken Park is a small green space that’s a popular stop on dog walks around the neighborhood. The scenic nook is shaded by leafy magnolia and live oak branches. It has a paved walkway, benches and a doggy bag dispenser. Dartmouth Park, Matthews Park and the College Park Neighborhood Center have the closest playgrounds, each about 2 miles away. The community center also features a fitness center and swimming pool.
Golf is another popular avenue for recreation in North Orlando. A couple of courses are within a 5-mile drive, but the closest is the Historic Dubsdread Golf Course. The 18-hole course has been an Orlando staple since 1924. In celebration of its centennial, the city is adding a brand new driving range and instructional golf facility.
Conveniences are 5 minutes away, and retail therapy is within a 15-minute drive
CVS Pharmacy is at the end of Maury Road, right at the intersection with Edgewater Drive, a major thoroughfare and commercial corridor. Edgewater Drive is lined with chain and locally owned restaurants like Gabriel’s Sub Shop, which has been family-owned since 1958. Zeytin Turkish Cuisine is also family-owned and known for its excellent service and halal menu, available by reservation only. As for grocery shopping and other errand runs, two Publix locations are within a 5-minute drive. For retail therapy and more restaurants, residents can drive less than 15 minutes down the Interstate 4 Expressway to Downtown Orlando.
Minutes from I-4, U.S. 441, LYNX bus stops and AdventHealth Orlando’s campus
Palomar is less than a mile from U.S. Highway 441 and about 2 miles from a ramp onto Interstate 4. The I-4 expressway is a straight shot into Downtown Orlando, just 5 miles away. The route to Orlando International Airport is closer to a 20-mile drive. LYNX bus stops are within walking distance along Maury Road, Silver Star Road and Edgewater Drive. AdventHealth Orlando – a major local employer – has a medical campus with the closest hospital about 3 miles away.
