Orrville is the home of Smuckers

The second-largest city in Wayne County, Orrville still isn't known for being a metropolis, even if it has come a long way since its founding in the 19th century. "The big news right now is that our Dairy Queen's been closed for renovations, and we're excited for it to open again," says Mayor Matthew Plybon. "But when I was growing up, it was just us in the middle of cornfields." Today, Orrville is known for a thriving manufacturing industry alongside approachable real estate prices and natural beauty.

Homes are priced significantly below the national median

Wayne County has the highest number of dairy farms in the state, making companies like Prairie Farms among the top employers in the area. The J.M. Smucker Company has also been a major job creator since its founding in 1897. The manufacturing and distribution industries have the biggest impact on the city's economy.

The median price for single-family homes in Orrville is in the low $200,000s—nearly half the national median price. The city's southern end is known for early-to-midcentury Cape Cods and American Foursquares, while ranch-style homes are popular west of North Crown Hill Road. The homes surrounding Hilltop Park are traditional-style homes built in the late 20th century.

Located in the city's center, Orr Park is a 40-acre public green space with athletic facilities, a dog park and the Orr Pool. The Heartland Trail offers nearly 6 miles of paved walkways through farmlands and wooded areas as far north as Marshallville. In 2026, construction will finish on an extension of the trail into Clinton. "Keeping up with our parks is important to the local quality of life," says Plybon.

Locally owned diners like Dravenstott's

Locally owned restaurants and retail establishments fill historic brick buildings on Main Street, attracting people from the smaller towns in the surrounding area. "We don't have a lot of chains in town," says Plybon. "But we still see a lot of the surrounding community coming to get groceries and go shopping." Dravenstotts Restaurant is a local institution serving everything from burgers to shrimp since 1969.
