North Ossining offers spacious living in the Town of Ossining

North Ossining offers a spacious and leafy alternative to the larger, neighboring village of Ossining. The community, part of the larger Town of Ossining, blends hillside residential communities with the occasional park and small business. Though the neighborhoods’s houses may be more expensive than those in the village, taxes are lower and yards tend to be bigger.

Homes feature hillside views and abundant nature

Occupying the foothills of the Taconic Mountains, North Ossining’s streets tend to be hilly and heavily forested. While homes closer to Ossining may cluster around cul-de-sacs, residences farther away from the village often have long driveways and large yard sizes. Townhouses sell for $480,000 to $770,000 and condos for $530,000 to $640,000. Homes under 2,000 square feet tend to go for $550,000 to $850,000, while most larger properties sell for $630,000 to $980,000. The priciest homes, which sell for $1,080,000 to $1,210,000, are typically isolated, either sitting along private streets or up tree-secluded driveways. North Ossining’s median sale price of $660,000 is higher than the village of Ossining’s median of $587,500. North Ossining has a CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Parks, trails and a golf course stretch along North Ossining's borders

The town of Ossining gives way to the Hudson Highlands at North Ossining’s northern edge. Cedar Lane Town Park includes a pond for fishing, a community garden, a dog park and space for hiking. Preserved wildflowers surround visitors to the Sunny Ridge Preserve as they venture down the occasional boardwalk and unmarked trail and immerse themselves in thick forest. Trails like the Briarcliff-Peekskill Trailway connect North Ossining to the rest of the Hudson Valley. The Hudson Hills Golf Course carries on the legacy of the Rising Sun Golf & Country Club, founded in 1936 as Westchester County’s first Black-owned and operated country club. Though that club went bankrupt in 1939 and its land was bought by IBM, the land was returned to the county in 2004 and transformed into a newer golf course that’s open to the public. Ryder Park and the Veterans Memorial Park each put three baseball fields in the middle of residential sections of North Ossining.

North Ossining has a small dining scene and easy access to the village

Though most of the town of Ossining’s restaurants and shops are concentrated in the village, North Ossining has its own share of small businesses. Along State Road, Terra Rustica Ristorante Italiano serves Italian fine dining in a white-tablecloth setting. Flames Bar and Grill has a similar feel, specializing in upmarket fare like steak and lobster. Maya Riviera Bar & Restaurant includes a bar, a lounge and outdoor seating where diners can feast on Mexican culinary classics. Commuters might stop at Briarcliff Bagels & More for coffee and a breakfast sandwich, while grocery runs often take shoppers to Green’s Natural Foods, the Four Seasons Marketplace or John’s Grocery.

Ossining High encourages scientific and musical pursuits

Students can start at Park School for kindergarten and Brookside School for grades 1-2; both schools receive B-plus ratings from Niche. Claremont School serves grades 3-4, the Roosevelt School grade 5, and Anne M. Dorner Middle School grades 6-8, each scoring a B-minus. The B-plus-rated Ossining High School offers a three-year science research program that culminates with local and national science competitions, and it’s also known for its strong music education extracurriculars.

Ossining offers train and highway access to New York City

New York City-bound commuters can drive down several highways, including the Saw Mill Parkway, to access Midtown Manhattan within a 36-mile journey. Ossining’s Metro-North Railroad station links travelers with Grand Central Station in around an hour’s train ride. Ossining’s downtown area is three miles down Croton and Hawkes Avenues. While Ossining has a handful of medical practices, the nearest medical center is the Phelps Hospital, six miles down U.S. Route 9 in Sleepy Hollow.
