Rebuilt homes and quiet lanes in Panther Creek
Panther Creek is a quiet community in the dense forests of north Lincoln County. In 2020, many homes in the area were lost to the Echo Mountain Fires. Soon after, locals volunteered to help their neighbors clean up and rebuild. Today, Panther Creek has a revitalized housing market that attracts residents looking to take a step back from the buzz of Lincoln City, 6 miles west. “I grew up in Otis and decided to move back to the area after having my first kid,” says Leah Michelson, a local real estate broker with Taylor & Taylor Realty Co. “I wanted to return to the community’s quiet atmosphere and having privacy from neighboring homes.”
A market of new and old and increasing prices
Neighborhood streets are lined with ranch-style homes, cozy cottages and manufactured homes. “The market is a mix of new and old,” Michelson says. “Overall, prices have increased due to the brand-new homes since the fire, but Panther Creek is still more affordable than Lincoln City neighborhoods.” Most houses sit on quarter to half-acre lots, with prices ranging from $170,000 to $410,000. The neighborhood has a 1 out of 10 CAP Index Crime Score, the lowest possible score.
Community events and nearby small businesses
The Panther Creek Community Center hosts bingo nights every Wednesday and a community breakfast on the first Sunday of every month. The neighborhood also has a monthly gardening club. A few miles east, Zeller’s Riverside Bar and Grill serves pizza, seafood and draft beer that can be sipped on during a round of pool. Locals can get their morning cup of joe at Wyldfire Coffee Co. or can get takeout pizza, calzones or subs across the street at Otis Pizzeria. North Lincoln City is around 7 miles west of the neighborhood and has a variety of shops and restaurants, along with a Safeway. “Lincoln City is largely supported by its tourism industry,” Michelson says. “There are lots of waterfront inns and small businesses and miles of clean beaches.”
Recreation along the Oregon coast
The Cascade Head Biosphere Reserve encompasses thousands of acres of forest, wetlands and shoreline. The reserve includes research areas, trails, an experimental forest and protected marine areas. At Knight Park, locals can fish for Chinook and chum salmon or launch a kayak or canoe for a drift along the Salmon River. The Lower Nature Conservancy Trail winds for 3 miles through preserved spruce and hemlock forests and grasslands, with views of the Pacific coast. The area has miles of publicly accessible shoreline, where beachgoers can surf and explore. Lincoln City hosts two annual kite festivals, one in June and one in September. The festivals have kite-making workshops, art displays and professional kite demonstrations on the beach.
Concurrent enrollment and CTE courses at Taft 7-12
Oceanlake Elementary School earns a C-plus overall grade from Niche and serves kindergarten through second grade. Third through sixth graders may attend C-rated Taft Elementary School. Taft 7-12 Middle and High School, also rated C, has career and technical education courses ranging from small engine mechanics to digital media design. High schoolers can take concurrent enrollment courses through Oregon Coast Community College.
Traveling along Highway 18 and long-distance travel options
Highway 18 lies just south of Panther Creek and stretches about 4 miles west to Otis Junction and the Oregon Coast Highway, putting the community roughly 30 miles from Sheridan. The Salem-Willamette Valley Airport, about 50 miles east, offers a limited selection of flights to Las Vegas and Burbank. Portland International Airport is 100 miles northeast.
