Endless recreation in the heart of Overland Park

In 2023, CNN named Overland Park one of the best mid-sized cities in the country for its unique attractions and recreation that locals have loved for years. “In Overland Park, you are never far from a well-planned neighborhood, a beautiful community park, a new career opportunity, a variety of recreational amenities, or world-class shopping, dining and experiences,” says Meg Ralph, communications and media manager from the Overland Park city manager’s office. The neighborhood of Milburn offers that classic small-neighborhood Overland Park feel anchored alongside one of the biggest private country clubs in the city. When residents aren’t fitting in tee time or relaxing by the pool, they can be found working in their elaborate gardens, shopping at the farmers market or enjoying a meal at one of the community’s top-rated restaurants.

Milburn locals are proud of their flower-filled streets

Milburn is full of ranch and split-level homes that were mainly built in the 1950s. These homes typically have between 3 and 4 bedrooms and “traditional” architectural features like stone chimneys or brick exteriors. Homes are built along neat, even sidewalks surrounded by large front yards and shade from full-grown oak trees. Gardens are common, and yards are often filled with flowering garden beds or bushes. Most properties are priced between $200,000 and $350,000 and several listings come on the market every month.

One-stop shopping in Downtown Overland Park

The nearby 75th and Metcalf Shopping Center, which is located at the intersection of Metcalf Avenue and 75th Street, has everyday needs, including groceries at Price Chopper. Milburn is less than 2 miles from Downtown Overland Park, which has locally owned bookstores, clothing shops and a seasonal farmers market on Marty Street. “One of the signature community amenities is the Overland Park Farmers’ Market, which brings dozens of vendors selling fresh produce, local foods and unique specialty items to Downtown Overland Park nine months out of the year,” Ralph says.

Several unique culinary options can also be found in Downtown Overland Park. Strang Hall along 80th Street offers a one-of-a-kind dining experience, with six restaurants under one roof. Diners should come hungry and take time to sample tacos, pizza, sushi, Thai cuisine and cocktails – all curated by local master chefs. When locals need a sweet treat or gift, they look no further than Strawberry Hill Baking Company just off Interstate 35. The bakery specializes in povitica, a type of Croatian pastry, and gourmet coffee cake.
