Four miles from Downtown Owensboro and the Ohio River, Apollo is a neighborhood that puts the needs of its residents right at their doorsteps – from fun fitness opportunities to nearby employers. The city's second most popular retail sector sits along the eastern border, and a major highway crosses along the north. Multiple schools are also inside the neighborhood, meaning most students are within walking distance of their education. Recent flood zoning changes have renewed interest in homes since fewer properties require mandatory flood insurance.

Cliff Hagan Boys and Girls Club teaches children about physical fitness and nutrition, while Owensboro Athletic Club invites adults to reach their health goals. Atlantis Swim Club is the community's go-to for a swim during the hot summer months. To the south, Waymond Morris Park has four full-size football fields for youth leagues and a 7-acre lake stocked with bass, trout and catfish. Winding around these amenities is a paved walking trail. Around the corner from the park is Kamuf Park, a multi-faceted sports complex. Teams go head-to-head on the baseball, soccer and softball fields. "Softball and tee ball facilities are heavily used by the city," says Sean Higgins, a Realtor with RE/MAX Professional Realty Group, who's sold homes in the area before. "We bring in a lot of sports tournaments since we're a sports-centric town."

Airport next door and a highway to everywhere
Highways 60 and 431 intersect within Apollo, making both easily accessible to drivers. Highway 60 takes drivers around Owensboro and toward Henderson, about 30 miles west. Southtown Boulevard and Tamarack Road are two other primary roads. Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport is next to the neighborhood. Although the runway is quite close, Higgins says, "I've never heard any expressed complaints about noise from the airport." This is mainly because a large amount of industry separates residential streets from the small airport. Higgins also says many people make the 45-mile drive over to Evansville to catch short commuter flights to Chicago.

Flood map rezoning renewing homebuyer interest
Apollo's housing market has seen a positive shift in homebuyer interest due to recent zoning changes. "A good number of homes have just come out of a flood zone because FEMA updated the national flood maps," says Higgins. "That zoning always served as a drag on those homes in the southern part of the city. Now, buyers don't have to pay flood insurance premiums, and that has an effect on their ability to pay their mortgage payments." With less financial obligation and less worry about flooding, homebuyers and investors are slowly but surely snatching up open listings. The neighborhood offers ranch-style homes, bungalows, Cape Cods, New Traditionals and split-level houses. Most properties have minimalist, red-brick exteriors, but some houses have big bay windows, bright white Craftsman-style columns and Tudor-inspired half-timbering. Prices typically range between $130,000 and $350,000.
