Named after the legacy of the Singing Cowboy, the small community of Gene Autry offers laidback living in the heart of Palm Springs. Entirely residential, the neighborhood is filled with midcentury homes and close to everyday convenience. “Palm Springs has a certain image, and it’s absolutely a resort town, but there are pockets that are truly for locals,” says Cathie Kong, a Realtor with Reliable Realty Inc. who specializes in Southern California. “Neighborhoods like Gene Autry aren’t insanely fancy and don’t have to be. You still get a gorgeous home and gorgeous views for a reasonable price – at least, reasonable for Palm Springs.”

Midcentury homes and flexible price ranges

The San Jacinto Mountains serve as a backdrop to the community, whose wide streets are lined with palm trees, cacti and natural shrubbery. Gene Autry is filled with midcentury modern and Spanish Revival homes, following the coastal style common in Palm Springs. While most of the neighborhood houses were built between 1975 and 1990, many have been remodeled with modern interiors and backyards often feature amenities like in-ground pools. A select few contemporary homes in Gene Autry were built after 2000. Houses on the smaller side that have been lightly renovated usually sell between $550,000 and $750,000, while larger homes with more extensive upgrades sell for $800,000 to $1.1 million.

Just outside the community, Gateway Park provides walking paths and bocce courts, serving more as an urban park than a natural green space. Victoria Park is less than 2 miles away with more extensive recreational options, including a newly remodeled playground, open grassy areas and covered picnic tables. Palm Springs High School's academies provide dual college credit

The neighborhood falls under the Palm Springs Unified School District, and most local kids will start at Vista del Monte Elementary School, which gets a B-minus on Niche. They can move on to B-rated Raymond Cree Middle School before heading to A-minus-rated Palm Springs High School. Aside from the standard curriculum, Palm Springs High also has several academics, including the Academy of Business Leadership and Entrepreneurship and the Palm Springs Academy for Learning Medicine. These academies allow students real-world experience and dual college credit in different career fields.

Easy connection to Interstate 10 and near Palm Springs International Airport

Gene Autry is next to Palm Springs International Airport, which services several commercial airlines. While convenient for residents, noise from planes coming and going can be noticeable. State Route 111 borders the community's southside and connects to Interstate 10 in northern Palm Springs. A few bus stops operated by SunLine Transit are nearby on Route 111. Gene Autry is only 2 miles from the Desert Regional Medical Center and its surrounding medical plaza.

Sunrise Square Shopping Center and Palm Springs Market Place, less than a mile from the neighborhood, offer necessities for everyday shopping. Albertsons and Stater Bros. Markets sit alongside national chains like Walgreens and Dollar Tree, all clustered at the intersection of Route 111 and Sunrise Way. “It’s less than 10 minutes from downtown Palm Springs, which is just obviously a cool place to be. Awesome restaurants and shops, tons of live shows and galleries. There’s a tourist element, but I don’t think you really get tired of it.”
