Historic Tennis Club
Luxurious homes and lush landscaping
While many residents own their own homes, nearly half of them rent. Most of Historic Tennis Club's single-family homes are either midcentury modern estates or Spanish Colonial Revival and California Mission villas from the 1920s; lush, manicured lots are semi-shaded by mature pine trees. According to Berger, these large homes range from around $2 million to upward of $5 million. “Many were owned or occupied by a movie star at one time or another,” she says. The community also has several condominium complexes, many with their own private amenities. Apartment-style units have floorplans ranging from about 800 to 2,000 square feet, and prices range from $400,000 to over $1 million.Within walking distance of restaurants and shopping
Several popular eateries are located right in Historic Tennis Club, including Spencer’s Restaurant, a stylish, upscale staple with a lengthy wine list and a Sunday brunch menu, and La Vallauris, a French-focused fine dining menu. Directly east of the neighborhood, Palm Canyon Drive and the adjacent Indian Canyon Drive are lined with popular restaurants and an eclectic array of retail shops, including the Elephant Walk Home Store, which offers everything from European soaps and candles to novelty socks. The closest grocery store, Grocery Outlet, is also here.Rich in art and architecture
Area galleries include the Palm Springs Art Museum, which is found at the neighborhood’s north end and features collections of European and Native American Art. Every February, Palm Springs Modernism Week showcases some of the city’s most prominent architecture. “People come from all over the world for Modernism Week,” Berger says. “We have double-decker buses that drive by to look at all the homes and midcentury architecture. There are fashion shows and lectures, and they host cocktail parties at Frank Sinatra’s old estate.”Access to hiking trails at the San Jacinto Mountains, with a nearby golf course
Several mountain hiking trails can be accessed from right within the neighborhood, including the nearly 5-mile out-and-back North Lykken Trail. “There are trails that you can access just by walking down your street,” Berger says. “There are some great views of the valley, and a lot of people hike up in the middle of the night to watch the sunrise over the desert.” Adventurous hikers can tackle the extremely challenging 21-mile Cactus to Clouds Trail, located on the neighborhood’s north side. With an elevation gain of nearly 11,000 feet, it’s regarded as one of the most difficult hikes in the U.S. Just north of the neighborhood, the O’Donnell Golf Club welcomes members to tee off from 9 holes, surrounded by mountain views.Though the original Palm Springs Tennis Club has since closed, many of the area resorts and condominium associations have private tennis courts, and Ruth Hardy Park, roughly 2 miles away, has public-use courts.
Career academies at Palm Springs High
The neighborhood is served by the Palm Springs Unified School District. Katherine Finchy Elementary earns a B-plus rating from Niche, while Raymond Cree Middle earns a B. At the A-minus-rated Palm Springs High, students can enroll in four-year career academies in fields like business and medicine.Direct access to one of the city’s main arteries
Sidewalk-lined streets allow residents to safely walk downtown. Palm Canyon Drive and Indian Canyon Drive are lined with bike lanes that also make it easy for residents to ride their bikes downtown. These two major routes are also lined with stops for the SunLine bus, which serves the Greater Palm Springs area. Interstate 10 is about 13 miles north, connecting residents with nearby hubs like Los Angeles about 110 miles away. Desert Regional Medical Center is about 2 miles away, just north of downtown, and the Palm Springs International Airport is about 3 miles east.Extreme summer temperatures increase fire risk
Palm Springs experiences extreme summer temperatures that regularly exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Not only can the sweltering heat be dangerous for residents to be outside in, but it can also exacerbate the risk of drought and wildfires. The City of Palm Springs has several fire stations, including a downtown location a mile away.
