A culture of celebrity and prestige
Just west of Downtown Palm Springs, at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains, Historic Tennis Club offers easy access to sought-after views, hiking trails and the city’s most popular shopping and dining. The neighborhood was named for the Palm Springs Tennis Club, which was made famous by Hollywood stars in the early 20th century. “In the 1920s and 1930s, when Palm Springs really took off, actors and actresses were under contract that said they couldn't be more than 120 miles of the studio in case they needed to do a reshoot," says Historic Tennis Club resident Carol Berger, an agent with Better Homes and Gardens Desert Lifestyle Properties. "That's how this area became so associated with the celebrity lifestyle.” The neighborhood still maintains an upscale, prestigious feel, with luxurious homes priced in the multi-millions.

Luxurious homes and lush landscaping
While many residents own their own homes, nearly half of them rent. Most of Historic Tennis Club's single-family homes are either midcentury modern estates or Spanish Colonial Revival and California Mission villas from the 1920s; lush, manicured lots are semi-shaded by mature pine trees. According to Berger, these large homes range from around $2 million to upward of $5 million. “Many were owned or occupied by a movie star at one time or another,” she says. The community also has several condominium complexes, many with their own private amenities. Apartment-style units have floorplans ranging from about 800 to 2,000 square feet, and prices range from $400,000 to over $1 million.

Rich in art and architecture
Area galleries include the Palm Springs Art Museum, which is found at the neighborhood’s north end and features collections of European and Native American Art. Every February, Palm Springs Modernism Week showcases some of the city’s most prominent architecture. “People come from all over the world for Modernism Week,” Berger says. “We have double-decker buses that drive by to look at all the homes and midcentury architecture. There are fashion shows and lectures, and they host cocktail parties at Frank Sinatra’s old estate.”

Access to hiking trails at the San Jacinto Mountains, with a nearby golf course
Several mountain hiking trails can be accessed from right within the neighborhood, including the nearly 5-mile out-and-back North Lykken Trail. “There are trails that you can access just by walking down your street,” Berger says. “There are some great views of the valley, and a lot of people hike up in the middle of the night to watch the sunrise over the desert.” Adventurous hikers can tackle the extremely challenging 21-mile Cactus to Clouds Trail, located on the neighborhood’s north side. With an elevation gain of nearly 11,000 feet, it’s regarded as one of the most difficult hikes in the U.S. Just north of the neighborhood, the O’Donnell Golf Club welcomes members to tee off from 9 holes, surrounded by mountain views.
Though the original Palm Springs Tennis Club has since closed, many of the area resorts and condominium associations have private tennis courts, and Ruth Hardy Park, roughly 2 miles away, has public-use courts.
