Between Denver and Colorado Springs is the historic neighborhood of Palmer Lake. This cozy mountain community was founded in 1871 and offers a rural experience with access to one of El Paso County’s most beloved outdoor treks.
Palmer Lake itself is the town’s ecological gem. One of the best ways to experience the lake is at the Palmer Lake Recreation Area, a 36-acre site at the base of Ben Lomand Mountain. Stroll down the walking paths that line the Southern half and enjoy the view of the willow trees. It’s also part of the Santa Fe Trail and provides opportunities for hiking, fishing and kayaking. For other outdoor spots, Glen Park features a playground, a tennis court and picnic tables for a simple secluded getaway.
“There’s a nice mix of old and new,” says Trish Flake, a Broker with Main Street Brokers. “We go back to the 1800, so there are many historic cabins and cottages mixed with new custom construction.” Palmer Lake properties include a variety of architectural types, from modern farmhouses to cozy cabins and ranch-style homes. The prices for these single-family houses range widely from the $400,000s to over $1 million. Prospective buyers can find charming townhomes and condos in the area as well, ranging in the upper-$300,000s. The community is one of three in the Tri-Lake region and rests at an elevation of 7,297 feet, giving residents a sprawling view of the town’s rolling mountains and fields.
Downtown Palmer Lake is the small but essential beating heart of the community. Drive down the dusty road past an eclectic assortment of locally owned cafes, novelty stores, boutiques and museums overlooking the lake. Much of the town maintains its historic buildings, giving the place a timeless feel. Large retailers like Safeway and popular chain restaurants are down Highway 87. For a quick pit stop, sip some coffee at Speedtrap or grab something sweet at Rock House Ice Cream Candy and More.
Feeling social? Palmer Lake hosts many community events for locals to mingle. Try a sip from one of 25 Colorado wineries at the Palmer Lake Wine Festival or experience Shakespeare In the Park at Palmer Lake Village Green. There are many annual holiday celebrations like the Yule Log Christmas and Fourth of July fireworks. When it’s time to get out of the country and explore the city, Denver is 1 hour away, and Colorado Springs is 30 minutes away.
In between all the nature-filled amenities, young town residents attend class in Lewis-Palmer School District 38. Palmer Lake Elementary School, which received a B-plus Niche grade, encourages its kids to give back to the community with programs like the Green Panthers environmental club and the K-Kids service organization. A-minus rated Lewis-Palmer Middle School offers unique extracurricular activities for students, from ceramics to Dungeons & Dragons. Palmer Ridge High School also has an A-minus grade and is known for its abundance of sports teams, including gymnastics and ice hockey, supported by its booster club.
Highway 105 takes residents through the town and Interstate 25 runs along the east side, so interstate travel is a breeze.
