Palmer is known as the town of seven railroads for its 19th-century roots as a major railway crossroad. It's a modern-day hub of transportation, too, thanks to its convenience to the Massachusetts Pike. "Palmer is a popular bedroom community for people who work in eastern and western Massachusetts, thanks to its easy access to the pike," says Karen King, a Realtor with RE/MAX Connections.
Homes in Palmer tend to range in price from around $300,000 up to $700,000. You'll generally find brick Ranchers, vinyl-sided Cape Cods, and stately Colonials. You'll spot plenty of well-kept yards, basketball hoops in driveways, and neighbors out and about taking walks and waving to each other on the street. Palmer is home to quiet streets a sense of small-town living, according to King. "We tend to have bigger lots in Palmer," says King.
Depot Village is Palmer's downtown and commercial center that's home to Union Station, a railway station turned historic site, and a train-themed restaurant called Steaming Tender. Along Park Street, you'll find restaurants and shops – catch a game at Tailgate Tavern, try the K.I.S.S. breakfast special at Girly's Grill or initiate tastebud takeoff at Apollo 1 restaurant with their Italian, Greek and American dishes.
Students in the area are part of the Palmer Public School District, which has a C+ rating on Niche and above-average ratings for its teachers and college prep, along with a student-teacher ratio of 10 to 1. There are two schools in the district, Old Mill Pond Elementary and Palmer High School, which have a C-plus and B-minus rating on Niche, respectively. Palmer High School is known for its teachers and college prep programs, along with being a top 20 STEM school in Springfield, Massachusetts, according to Niche.
With a long history as a rail town, Modern-day Palmer has picked up the pace along the winding track of Palmer Motorsports Park. Nature surrounds the track, which has become a destination for local car clubs and drawn racetrack enthusiasts to the area. If you're looking for something at a slower pace, head to Burleigh Park. In the shade of a 20-acre forest, the park is home to a basketball court and several baseball diamonds.
Pulaski Park is another popular outdoor space known not only for its green space but also for its cultural value. It's a hub for polka music and is known as the polka capital of New England, thanks to its popularity among polka performers. Not only can you catch live music at the park, but it's also a popular spot for the community to gather on sunny weekends. "Palmer has a welcoming and friendly community," King says.
20 miles from Springfield, Interstate 90 and U.S. Route 20 zip through southern Palmer, providing easy access to the city and surrounding area. Just be sure you don't take what you've learned at the motorsports park and apply it to the highway.
