Resort-style living in the master-planned Artisan Lakes

Artisan Lakes is a new resort-style, master-planned community in the growing area of Palmetto. The luxury pools, fitness centers and wine tastings are a main appeal for new residents, including out-of-state relocators seeking a Floridian lifestyle. "I find that for folks coming from out of state, the mindset is, where can I find a pool, where can I cool off in the heat," says Michele Urbanowski, a Fine Homes and Estates Realtor with Century 21 Link who is active in the whole Tampa Bay area. "These homes either have private pools or access to the amenity center pool."

Taylor Morrison apartments, townhouses and single-family homes

This is a Taylor Morrison community, with apartments, townhouses and single-family homes, both custom and resale. "If people are looking to move from out of state, there are all different price points to make it affordable," Urbanowski says. Eave's Bend is an ungated subdivision on the east side, and Esplanade is a maintenance-free, gated subdivision on the west side. The single-family homes range from about 1,400 square feet to 3,500 square feet and include Mediterranean and modern designs. "They're desirable since they're so new," Urbanowski says. "The big ticket items don't need replacing." Prices range from around $330,000 to under $1 million. Edgestone has two and three-bedroom townhouses, typically ranging from $230,000 to $330,000.Hurricanes are a concern for Florida's coastal areas, including the Gulf Coast. Many Artisan Lakes homes have storm shutters. Some are within flood zones, which are sporadic around the neighborhood.

Resort-style amenities close to home

Each community has its own amenity center with a lagoon-shaped pool, clubhouse, fitness center, dog park and playground. They feature expansive, brick-paved pool decks with umbrellas. "Lots of the common areas will have shade, which is important in Florida," Urbanowski says. Esplanade, the largest amenity center, offers a café and tennis, pickleball and bocce ball courts. Eave's Bend has a pirate ship-themed playground, basketball court and soccer field. Other attractions in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Sarasota are nearby, such as Siesta Key Beach and Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Grocery stores and restaurants on Moccasin Wallow Road

Staples such as Publix have opened along Moccasin Wallow Road, which forms the neighborhood's southern border. More are on the way. "There are going to be some big box stores, supermarkets, fast food restaurants — there are a whole bunch of ideas planned for this area," Urbanowski says. Corporate Ladder Brewing Company and The Greyson are casual spots to grab a drink and watch the game. American Honey has become a local favorite for specialty coffee drinks, bakery and breakfast items and ice cream. Palmetto is another commercial anchor about 10 miles south. Thrift stores and boutiques line 10th Avenue. Riverhouse Waterfront Restaurant serves a variety of seafood on the outdoor patio overlooking the Manatee River.

Early high school and college credits at Manatee County schools

Manatee County School District serves the area. Kids typically attend Tillman Elementary School, Buffalo Creek Middle School and Palmetto High School, each earning a B from Niche. Buffalo Creek Middle offers rigorous high school-level courses through Cambridge University's pre-AICE program. Middle schoolers potentially earn up to seven high school credits to carry with them into 9th grade. Teens can continue with the AICE program at Palmetto High School and earn early college credits.

Food trucks and wine tasting in Esplanade

Events most often take place in the Esplanade subdivision. Its clubhouse hosts wine tastings and cooking classes, and local restaurants visit the neighborhood during food truck nights. "The focus is to build the community," Urbanowski says. "It's such a huge area, yet the events bring you together." Farther afield, the city of St. Pete hosts around 1,000 events each year, including the popular St. Pete Pride and Reggae Rise Up festivals. Pirates storm the shores at Gasparilla, a favorite Tampa tradition dating back to 1904.

Highways, airports and hospitals

Artisan Lakes is between Tampa, about 40 miles north, St. Petersburg, about 25 miles north, and Sarasota, about 25 miles south. Interstate 75, a nearby route to the cities and beyond, has an entrance about 2 miles away. Tamiami Trail is a local route into Palmetto. The neighborhood is out of reach of Manatee County Area Transit bus routes. Sarasota Bradenton International Airport offers nonstop flights to around 60 unique U.S. cities. HCA Florida Palmetto Emergency is about 10 miles south for urgent medical care.
