Nature retreat outside Chicago continues to grow
Only 40 minutes southwest of Downtown Chicago, yet home to 15,000 acres of nature preserves and a municipal golf course, Palos Hills provides a forested escape from the city at the end of the work week. Miles of plush nature preserves, top-rated schools and one of the lowest municipal tax rates of the Chicago suburbs continue to draw newcomers to Palos Hills. “We’ve hit the second largest population increase over the last 10 years,” says Mayor Gerald Bennett, a resident of the city since the early ‘70s.

Palos Hills: a nature enthusiast's dream
Palos Hills is rich with activities for the outdoorsy types. The city's west side includes 15,000 acres of woods and forest preserves, known cumulatively as the Palos Preserves. The preserves were named an “Urban Night Sky Place” by the International Dark-Sky Association—a location with an authentic nighttime experience despite its proximity to a significant urban area. The campsites at Bullfrog Lake offer prime real estate for stargazing at night, and over 40 miles of trails allow for hiking, mountain biking and cross-country skiing before the sun goes down. Horse owners can train and board their steeds at Palos Hills Riding Stables, taking rides into the nearby preserve trails. The Palos Hills Golf Course is a nine-hole, par 35 course open to the public on the city's eastern side. With adult leagues, tournaments and competitively priced green fees, golf enthusiasts can fine-tune their swing.
