A low-key community experience with commuting convenience

Sprouting out of the fertile Chester County countryside, Parkesburg is a small hamlet with easy access to the Philadelphia region. “It’s a pretty quiet and slow-paced town,” says Christopher Macey, Realtor with RE/MAX Direct. It's very community-centric, with residents coming together to celebrate holidays with activities, parades and get-togethers. At the same time, major nearby routes and a train station in the heart of town make Parkesburg a commuter-friendly destination for those who want to enjoy rural life with convenience – Philadelphia, Wilmington and Lancaster are all within an hour, while West Chester and Exton are much closer.

Celebrated brews and delicious desserts

Victory Brewing Company Parkesburg is one of numerous Victory locations in the region, and Macey points out it’s been a great addition to the community, saying “The brewery really helps draw more people to the area.” Serving up core beers as well as ones unique to the Parkesburg location, the brewery also features a deep food menu. Rocco and Anna’s Ristorante has been a long-time local favorite for thin-crust pizza and classic Italian dishes, while residents gather after Little League games or on warm summer nights at Bell’s Delites, a mom-and-pop ice cream stand offering milkshakes, specialty sundaes and more. To cook at home, locals grab necessities from Parkesburg Grocery Outlet or fresh and local from Hershey’s Farm Market, north of town. West Sadsbury Commons, also to the north, is home to national retailers and chain restaurants.

Older homes in the heart of town, single-family homes on the outskirts

Parkesburg reflects generations of growth in its architecture. Through the heart of town, Colonial revival and national design features on twin and single-family homes from the turn of the 20th century, many with on-street parking. Late-1900s row homes and townhouses feature similar modern traditional design, as do the single-family homes found further out in neatly laid out subdivisions, featuring larger yards and off-street spots. Twins, semi-detached and older town houses generally sell for between $175,000 and $300,000, while single-family homes regularly sell for $250,000 to $450,000. Homes sell quickly in the Parkesburg area, often staying on market for two weeks or less versus the national average of six weeks.

A hub of activities

In the center of town, Minch Park is a hub of activity throughout the year, from organized events and Little League games played on the two ball fields, to play days on the playground. Multiple tennis courts are available for play, while it butts up against the Parkesburg Free Library, for rainy day activities. Residents looking for something a bit more strenuous can head to the nearby Planet Fitness, a 24-hour location of the chain of gyms.

Hometown events bring the community together

Parkesburg Action Committee organizes Main Street Final Friday events throughout the year, bringing folks out to Main Street to enjoy the artisans, food vendors, business owner and more that line the street. The Lions Club, meanwhile, hosts the annual Halloween Parade followed by Trunk or Treat at Minch Park, which is also where the annual Community Festival is in July.

Trains are a great option

While some parts of the heart of Parkesburg are walkable, for the most part is a car-dependent community. Amtrak trains stop at the station in the heart of town, offering service to and from Philadelphia for easy commuting, while Route 30 isn’t too far off to get around the region by car. Chester County Airport is a nearby general aviation airport, but for commercial flights, Philadelphia International Airport is the most convenient option 40 miles away – generally an hour drive.

The Parkesburg Amtrak station is a convenient way to access Philadelphia, only a 45 minute ride.

Health care concerns

Living in the countryside, access to emergency care is not easy. While Lancaster General Hospital has a daytime Urgent Care Center north of town, 24-hour emergency care is a further drive. Chester County Hospital in West Chester is 18 miles away, often a drive of 30 minutes or more, while Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster is 25 miles, often a drive of 40 to 50 minutes.
