Named after a Lenape term believed to refer to the nearby Licking River, Pataskala has a history dating back to 1851. Today, the area has seen a rise in housing interest and development thanks to its short distance from Columbus and the rest of the central Ohio metropolitan area.

Harrison is an old-fashioned neighborhood in an old-fashioned town. This 30-square mile neighborhood in the City of Pataskala in Licking County benefits from the well-run city services and quaint history of the small city, while its large land mass has allowed for the development of subdivisions such as Beechwood Trails. Local government employee John Singleton says, "People move here for the wide-open spaces."
Beechwood Trails is a 6-square-mile census-designated place on the north side of Harrison. Winding roads and cul-de-sacs peppered with eponymous beech trees abut large farms. Three-bedroom colonial-inspired homes built in the late 20th century are listed for under $350,000 in this subdivision. Closer in toward the city center, luxury subdivisions such as the Ravines of Hazelwood are filled with new constructions of homes designed as a cross between a modern farmhouse and a Cape Cod. Three bedrooms on these new streets are listed for under $500,000. In the west of the neighborhood, there are tracts large and small, selling for under $70,000 an acre.
Pataskala Elementary School is in the charming town center of Pataskala and received a B on the school rankings website Niche. A few blocks east of Harrison in the township of Etna are the adjacent campuses of Watkins Middle and Watkins Memorial High Schools. Both received B-minuses on Niche, and Watkins High recently transitioned students to the Google Classroom suite of learning programs.
Harrison commuters may hope on Interstate 70 to reach Downtown Columbus 20 miles west, typically a 20-minute drive during rush hour. State Route 16 runs through Harrison, providing a more relaxing and scenic route into Columbus. Pataskala has no bus service, so residents need cars to get around.
Of course, if you live in downtown Pataskala, you could do without a car, provided you work and play here. The old colonial homes are lovely around here, and with the South Fork Licking River running right through town, Pataskala can feel like a small American town out of time. There is a train crossing through downtown Main Street, and the well-preserved prewar Victorian and Italianate storefronts have thriving businesses. Inside a little prewar shotgun shack is The Depot Street Pub and Grub. The sign hanging outside is straight out of Bonnie and Clyde, and visitors can order a mean cheeseburger inside or through the takeout window. Depot Street Coffeehouse serves coffee in the mornings and beer in the evenings. A couple of blocks away, the Pataskala Farmers Market opens every Friday all summer, featuring a cornucopia of local and artisanal food and goods. For the colder months, there's a big new Kroger in town.
A short walk away, Pataskala Municipal Park is an extensive park with playgrounds, sports fields, a paved trail through the woods and a small creek. Outside of town, Beechwood Trails Park and Pool is a private green space with a pool and its own farmers market in the subdivision of the same name. The Broadview Golf Course is a private course newly designed by a local architect. The 18-hole course is popular for its native landscape.
