Peletier offers rural-suburban living close to the NC Coast
On the edges of the North Carolina coast, Peletier invites folks to slow down and stay a while. “One of the biggest draws is how close it is to the ocean, but most families move here because the school district is very highly desirable,” says Realtor Amber Raynor with Coldwell Banker Sea Coast Advantage. Public schools serving Peletier all have A ratings from Niche, which is important to locals. Raynor also highlights Peletier’s proximity to two Marine Corps installations, Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point. “We’re just outside of Jacksonville, so we get folks who are stationed there but want to come to a quieter area that’s closer to the beach,” Raynor says. And it goes without saying that the beach is a major perk of living in Peletier. Residents are just a short drive from the water, so boating, fishing, swimming and other water activities are within reach.
Water activities, golf, trails and neighborhood parks
Getting out on the water is a way of life in Peletier. Whether strolling along walking trails overlooking marshy creeks and tidelands, fishing and crabbing off the Emerald Isle Beach pier, or boating around Bogue Sound and its branching waterways, residents find a way to be near the water. “Boating is a huge deal around here, and Peletier is close to several public boat ramps,” Raynor says. Emerald Isle Beach is also a favorite for summer swims in the Atlantic, beach picnics and sunbathing on golden sand. Peletier is also near Croatan National Forest, a coastal pine forest with walking trails, campgrounds and a lake with a ramp for non-motorized boats. Residents can drive to Western Park in Cape Carteret for a more traditional city park. This pet-friendly space features athletic fields, tennis courts, a playground and a community center. Nearby, Star Hill Golf Club offers daily public tee times.
Suburban residences and waterfront homes with room to develop
On the marshy coast of the White Oak River, residences are spread out among pine forests and acres of farmland. With fewer than 500 households, there's plenty of room to spread out here and even more room to build custom homes. “It’s an established area, but there are some new home communities popping up, because so many people want to be in the school district,” Raynor says. “It’s also a little more budget-friendly compared to bigger cities like Jacksonville and Swansboro.” There are a few townhouses and manufactured homes communities, with prices typically ranging between $165,000 and $250,000. The rest of the housing options are a mix of subdivisions and developments with New Traditional, ranch-style and Cape Cod homes. Homes usually list between $440,000 and $800,000, depending on the level of updates or if it's new construction. These houses often have large, spacious yards; some have views of ponds, creeks and the river. Larger homes and waterfront residences can range between $975,000 and $2 million. For those looking for their piece of land to custom develop, lots between a quarter acre and two acres have prices ranging from $90,000 to $200,000.

The school offers the Career and College Promise Program, which provides college credits and technical education classes through nearby Carteret Community College.
Highway 58 offers local restaurants, shops and access to nearby cities
Peletier is a primarily residential community with a few small businesses, churches and restaurants on Highway 58. Coastal Haze Restaurant is a go-to for the area, offering tacos, handhelds and fried seafood on a covered outdoor patio. There's also a Dollar General for quick necessities. One of Peletier's draws is the Carteret County Speedway, which hosts races and monster truck rallies. Just south, in Cape Carteret, there's Lowe's Foods, pharmacies, supply stores, and a mix of chain and local restaurants. 34 Degrees North is favorite, featuring self-serve beer taps, food trucks and an outdoor games area with cornhole tournaments. Other seafood shacks and local eateries are down Highway 58 on the way to the beach. Other retail amenities can be found in surrounding communities. There is a Publix in Emerald Isle and a shopping district in Jacksonville with big box stores like Target and the Jacksonville Mall.
Commuting from Peletier
Highway 58 is the community's main thoroughfare, traveling south to Emerald Isle and north to New Bern. The nearest Interstate, I-40, is about 75 miles from Peletier. There isn't public transportation, so residents are car dependent. While several urgent care centers are nearby in Cape Carteret and Swansboro, the closest hospital is Onslow Memorial, 20 miles away. Active duty or retired military and their dependents can receive care at Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, 30 miles from the community. Peletier is 40 miles from Coastal Carolina Regional Airport in New Bern and 80 miles from Wilmington International Airport. The community has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, significantly lower than the national average of 4.
Due to Peletier's risk of flooding along coastal areas, residents should remain aware of evacuation routes during hurricane season, which runs from June to November.
